Ah, found the right thread ...
My company has a great job going for a financial journalist. We are a debt newswire, reporting on corporate debt situations. It's top-notch output, all source-based and the focus is on high-quality exclusive content. The money's good, starting from 25k for a junior to double that for someone who knows their sh*t.
If you are a financial journalist or analyst, particularly with knowledge of real estate finance or securitisation, then I'd love to hear from you!

You don't happen to have a social media nerd called Mary at your place, do you? If so, I was thinking of going for that job.

Graphic desingner (with print experience) wanted
I'm making an illustrated poetry book - one-off/limited edition - already got all the illustrations as jpegs and all the text as well but I need someone to help me put it together, organize it all ready to send to the printers.
If you're a graphic designer with a print background/knowhow then get in touch - great if you're artistic, bit of a perfectionist is important, got experience with bookbinding in need of a bit of extra cash and got some free time.
Not sure how much to pay you? - it's not an immediate money maker, I guess between £50 - £200 possibly more depending on hours / professionalism
pm me with a bit about yourself - cheers
-
• #687
I would stay away from jpegs as your image sources. Id use a lossless file format.
-
• #688
I think £50 - £200 is taking the piss a bit, That's not even a day-rate for a complete beginner/student. I passed it on to someone perfect for the job though.

I don't think 200 is ridiculous, little low, but this clearly aint a corporate design job. You could get the layout sorted in one day, It is easily possible to sort out print of one book in a few hours and I can hand bind a book in about 4 hours... £100 a day for a non corporate design job of this nature is ok.
Out if interest what is the approximate page count? do you want it hard or paper back? and when are you looking to get this done?

Why would you say this? If you think you can come up with a lower rate, can't you keep it to yourself?
Sorry but for someone who wants to make a living out of this profession, 200 is the minimum day rate for freelancing, in fact for any profession. As this will not even get you 20K at the end of the year if you work every day.
Time to wake up I think. -

I'm just trying to work out the maths
"200 is the minimum day rate for freelancing, in fact for any profession. As this will not even get you 20K at the end of the year if you work every day."
working days in year: 250
minimum rate: 200250 x 200 = 50000
am I missing something?
-
• #694
Let's hope Cedywedy isn't a freelance accountant.
-
• #695
I am a freelance designer
£200-£250 a day is for a corporate client,
this is a guy, who wants one book making. Just one book.
if you work at £100 5 days a week for 50 weeks - that's £25k your maths is off mate.
-
• #696
hahaha
-
• #697
am I missing something?
tax, expenses etc...
-
• #698
It's a free market, if that's not your going rate then just leave it. Someone else might just take it up. Not everyone does it for the sake of bills...
-
• #699
IMHO, There are many factors in determining whether a budget is appropriate for a job: in this case the complexity, time frame, Inclusion of materials/print costs, hand labour (simple hardback or special binding/format. To be fair I always hear a client out before giving a good quote that I think I deserve in return for my skills and hard work! I understand what cedywedy is saying on the basis that there are people out there who want to pay very little for good work and try to get away with it, sadly they do as sometimes people are desperate for work. this does lower the Market rate and leave lots of freelancers frustrated! But I believe in getting what you pay for, if a client is appreciative of what I can do, I'm willing to work out an appropriate budget.
For design work depending on lvl of skill I would say ranging btw £10 to £20 an hour?
