  • Hi all,

My sister arrives tomorrow from Canada. She's going to need a job.

She's a hospitality type, having worked tables/bars at various establishments ranging from classy private golf course dining rooms to bars in brawler pubs.

She's ace and friendly and very good at what she does.

If anyone in the industry has something which might be suitable, please send me a PM.

    Cheers!

  • what does she look like??

  • Like Balki but with lady bits?

What do you mean no-one tips? I can't think of a single person who doesn't tip, except when the service is really fucking awful.
What kind of restaurant did you work in where ppl didn't tip? Were you just crap at your job?

  • Candidate interviewer/administrator.

we're looking for someone who has brilliant chat basically, university education, bit of commercial experience to look after temporary workers, sort out problems, interview potential candidates occasionally match people to jobs as directed by the manager.

You'll look after about 100 workers who are mainly 20-30 years old, and its all about making sure they are happy, and if they aren't happy they are telling us so we can move them on and fill their old job, so predominantly about building a relationship with candidates.

Salary is £20-23k with a bonus which was about £6k last year.

Its in Charity and not for profit recruitment, its not for someone who wants to be a recruitment consultant and realisitcally based on previous job holders the expectation is that you'll probably only be there for 18months or so. you're not going to get kicked out of there but people who have held the post usually move on to something else in the organisation.

  • If anyone's after a job... Pretty dull stuff but it's all money, innit? PM me if you're interested and I'll hook you up... J x

I am currently looking for an admin/marketing assistant temp to help out on the CIH Harrogate Conference and Exhibition for the next few weeks.

They need to have solid admin skills, a good command of English – as they’re likely to be proofing documents, a good telephone manner, and be able to juggle a varied workload.

No need to get fiesty. Yes most people here tip 10% in restaurants, and maybe even pubs if they eat, but virtually never at a bar or in other areas of hospitality. In most cases now it's a service charge from which the kitchen/servers see very little. In Canada you get tipped about 20% at restaurants and table service bars and about $1 per drink if your serving at a late night bar/club. Tour guides, bellmen, cleaners, pretty much every service job is rewarded extra cash in some way. You can take home $100 a night at a restaurant and double that in a bar. The wages are miserly of course, but no more so than here for the same work.
Soooo, maybe what I should have said is please warn her not to expect a similar standard of living here if she wants to work in hospitality. It's very much hand to mouth - something to think about when you get your next bill and the food/service has been good.

  • I know what you're saying but we've never tipped for bar staff (likewise most of the world outside N.America). So just because ppl do in other countries then I don't think we should. I don't see there's a need, ppl don't have to work in bars and if we tip there then why not other places? (shops, dry cleaners etc...).
I work in the workshop of a bike shop and I've had tips a few times. Its amazing when it happens but I don't feel bad if someone doesn't and I'd hate it if it became the norm - of course I'd like the money but I'd hate it if we adopted the American tipping culture. I find it quite absurd really.

But you are quite right it could be a culture shock to her if she's used to ppl doing it in Canada.
