  • The hammer method seems to be quite popular! Sounds like you were lucky Murtle

    Cheap headset = meh

  • Chris DeBurgh is making headsets now? His music career's gone off the rails a bit then!

  • Yeah, 120 spuds worth aint getting hit with any kind of hammer folks! :)

  • Sounds like you were lucky Murtle

nope, just determined, and a stuborn fncker, and a lot lot of yelling between hammer blows..........."get...........in..........there.......you..........fncker!!"

  • I've fitted every headset in every frame I've ever owned (a lot) with either a bitof wood, or a home-made press with bolts and washers. and they've all been fine.

but then I use cheap headsets.

    Chris De-fuckin-Burgh!

  • Yeah, 120 spuds worth aint getting hit with any kind of hammer folks! :)

yup, and mine is a king

  • Wanna do mine! ;)

  • Wanna do mine! ;)

yup, but you would have to wait outside though.

  • ok, it's like 'that' is it . . . err, on second thoughts

  • The headset i put in recently took me 2 hours to tap tap tap the bottom bearing race in alone... it was a right mare !

You can't tell untill you try whether it will go in or not, but it would have been a million times easier to go to my LBS

  • Cycle Scurgery Highbury; 70 Holloway Rd have tools n will probably fit you in today if you can leave the frame with them for a few hours.
    Give them a call after 10, 0207 697 2848.

  • Thanks for all the help so far peeps!

  • Brixton Cycles fitted mine in 5 mins, not north but easy to get to and will do it while-you-wait if you turn up at the beginning of the day...

  • Cheers TS.

  • Try putting the cups in the freezer for a while before trying to fit them yourself to contract the metal slightly. then try using a homemade press with blocks of wood, a long threaded bolt & nut to press it all together.

Is there a press owned by anyone here as part of the open tool box that could help?

  • hammer + bit of wood

    whack whack jobs a goodun

    :P
that's how i install my headsets!

  • that's how i install my headsets!

    you got that off me

  • cock-off!

  • neg rep, for copying me again.........dingobollox

  • fuggin, mumble... mumble, feck!

  • +1 with Murts and Dale. Whatever happened to a good old whacking with a mallet and/or hammer? Easy, no....?

  • Brixton Cycles, or Cavendesh will sort it for you.

  • UPDATE:

Sorted thanks folks! Took it to London Bicycle Repair http://www.londonbicycle.com/repair.htm
as reccomended by AndyP. The guy there is doing it in a few hours and charging me lass than a tenner, whereas BLB wanted £30 and dont even have the tools!!

Appreciate all the help, you've all earned a special place in my heart! Now, if I can get this fucking bike finished before Sunday, I can ride it to HH Track day 2! :)

    Peas, Out!

  • Glad you got it sorted. London Bicycle Repair are a bit of a well kept secret - they are always very helpful and don't give you "it'll be 3 weeks before we can see it" spiel.

  • Yup, Top tip dude, rep added!
