I've just dug out my 18 hole Dr. Martins bovver boots, time to get cutting ..hmm white or red laces today?
If you wear white laces you'll fit in better at club hardon. -

dm cycling shoes?
Bowling shoes would be much better!

I really wanna convert my loake Brogues now. They are by far the most comfy and best fitting things I've ever put on my feet.
-

you might struggle with brouges as the plate/screws will protrude a bit into the shoes. Not a problem with skate shoes which have big rubber soles and innersoles.

wow. well done. might have a crack at this.

I've just finished turning my Nike high tops into spd shoes.
started with some nike (funnily enough) spd shoes, a knife, some glue and my Nike high tops
Then chopped the spd shoes to pieces to get the hard soles out. I found a bread knife worked well for this.
Then I took the inner soles out the High tops, placed the hard soles inside and marked where the holes are. Then I chopped through the bottom sole of the shoes.
I put loads of glue on the underside of the hard soles, let it dry a little then put them inside the shoes and packed with newspaper to keep them pressed down.
Roughly 24 hours later I removed the newspaper and gave them a little test and all seems to be good. So I put in the metal plate the cleats screw in to, sorted the position of the cleats and screwed them in. I used the inner sole of the spd shoes as the original Nike high top ones squashed my foot a bit by the toes with this new layer of sole inside.
I can clip in and out with no trouble, and the cleat does not stick past the outer sole so there's no clicking noise when walking.
Not ridden them yet, but will tomorrow. All in all, very impressed and it was really easy. Thanks goes to HatBeard for the cheap spd shoes.

Once I get that rounded cleat bolt drilled out on mine I'll post my air force one conversions.
the hole I had to cut is much bigger than yours though. was impossible to clip in other wise. that was using sh-51 cleats though
-

I've rounded the cleats on my Sidi's now as well but I don't have a big screw driver to get them out with a dremeled slot. I've cut another cm off the front of the left one now just to be safe.

I could probably get mine out with a decent set of needle nose pliers as the sole isn't glued into the shoe yet so I can get at the threaded side and maybe unscrew them. my home toolkit is woefully bad though.
-
• #36
5mm drill, and drill the head off, then get pliers on the threaded bit.

does anyone sell cycling-specific insoles? ie. thin and stiff, that could go under an ordinary insole in a shoe and make it more suitable for cycling in.

These guys look like they have converted a fair few shoes:
http://retrofitz.blogspot.com/
also check out the use of old brake blocks t give the cleats a bit of clearance:

Similar to the retrofitz guys, I have been working with plastics to create a slotted SPD sole that can be fitted to normal trainers.
Still probably another 2 weeks before they are ready though...tweaking the prototype as we speak. -

it'll be like walking in road shoes -

might give this a go does anyone have any only uk10, eur 44.5 spd's they don't want anymore?

WHUT?! You've turned a pair of AF1's into clipless shoes? Skills!
I can't/haven't mastered riding clipless yet but I've found that of all my kicks (of which I have many. Which are banging. Fact) my Air Force 1's are really good to ride in cos they've got a good solid, fairly rigid sole. Much better than my 6.0's but it took me a while to wise up to what might be good for bmx isn't good for other types of riding :faceplonk:

This.
Before this evening I was all "are SIDI's really that good? Like £100+ good? You could get some really, really nice shoes for that kind of money...maybe even a few pairs..." until I actually tried a pair on. I can see/feel why people shell out for them!
-
• #45
^^no I meant I'm wearing the sidis so I didn't bother finishing the af1's fool.
if you ever made it to SE's anymore you'd know this :P

Ha.
This is one of the most satisfying things to do, if you construct them properly.
I now have 4 pairs going strong:
ES Kostons(above)
Osiris Daze
Etnies Sals Hi-Top

Just glued mine.
Globe shoes to some Shimano soles. Getting it all apart was a faff but not too difficult.
Packed full of newspaper but the bit around the hole wasn't touching so got some clamps out and clamped it all up. Will see how they're doing tomorrow morning. Hopefully they'll be good for polo this weekend.

Is it possible with flip flops?
-
• #49
Probably. Shimano used to make spd sandals.

I've been meaning to have a crack at this since you first posted up this thread back in 08, Mack. One quick question though, do you not find your shoes rubbing against the crank? I'm a bit worried 'cause the q-factor on my bikes is quite low, i thought this may be a problem on narrow track frames, especially with Hi-Tops or chunky skate shoes. Cheers!
racist.
