  • Chop, the Fenix is a much better helmet light and as bright if not brighter than Hope V1.

Those knogs are shit Max. Get some proper lights fella. You shoulda kept that fibre flare rather than selling it for beer money.

  • +1 on Knogs, they are sweet accessories, but seeing a few riders tonight with them just seen again how LAME they are at giving you protection.

That's pretty impressive considering the price difference, I was considering a Hope V1 for my commute when I move house in the new year as I'll need a light to see by. I might just reconsider...

I've raved about fibre flares before, but they are pretty damn good as a light to be seen by. What I havent talked about before is the build quality; it's good. Rain doesn't get in, the clips are strong enough to grip slippy jersey material so mounting it on clothes is easy and you don't need to worry about it slipping off. Plus the silicone 'brackets' are extremely versatile allowing many mounting options (I used one as a mount for a different light).
Battery life is also good. The batteries that came with it lasted about 6 weeks (2 hours a day commute, at least 3 times a week) on flashing mode. Fresh batteries haven't run out yet...

Anyone know when the colours other than red are available?

  • I'm afraid that the fibre flares isn't quite that visible, a cheap flashing rear light work a lots better frankly.

  • you're talking poppycock again Ed.

  • I was riding behind Clefty who had one strapped on her bicycle, it's visible from a certain distance, but nowhere near as visible as a cheap bike light like this;

  • See post #304

In my experience cheap lights are ok if youre right behind them. The strength of the FF is that it doesn't rely on a lense to focus the light. The visibility is often greater than 180 degrees, and often only limited by whatever it is mounted to.

I should point out that I use a Fibre Flare (flashing) in conjunction with a Blackburn Mars 3 (steady) and helmet (yes yes, I know) mounted flashing LEDs.

I'm not saying they are the light to end all lights (even if it might sound like it), but the more comparisons we have, (hopefully) allows people to make more informed decisions on what to buy.

EDIT: Ok so you're talking about the distance you can see it from, right? The FF is advertised as being visible from 300m, no idea how accurate this is but in an urban environment I don't care about the vehicle 300m behind me, I care about the vehicles 30m or closer!

  • Not sure whether to invest in something like a Hope V1, or something a bit cheaper like this:

LOL, I often consider it. I was thinking more about night riding though. I've been doing it a lot more recently and my Cateye is crap.

  • Pifko check out the Fenix. 44 GN

Seriously though, do you have that much trouble with not being seen? Adam said he has had a few near misses with cars in front turning across him, but that's Adam...

Edit: OK night riding, fair enough... Get a helmet mounted Fenix and tell me how it is ;)

yes, I'm talking about the distance, it's fine close up, but not so much from a distance, still better than a knog frog thought.

  • I've always wanted to know, I've got one of those counterfeit fenix torches. Super mega blindingly bright, should i have it on flashing or still when riding in London?

  • Up to you really, I find flashing more idea because of all the light in London, flashing indicate a cyclist within the vicinity, also save on battery life too, you only need it to be seen by other.

However, superbright light often get mistaken for a scooter which is a bonus (I mistook Clefty for one on the ride home), downside is naturally the battery light leaving it on bright.

Like I said, up to you.

I have one and every time I hit a bump in the road it switches to flash mode anyway.

  • I had this issue with a back-up bar-mounted Romisen (cheaper Fenix equivalent). Trying stretching out the spring on the inside of the top cap…

  • Will do.
