New Lumicycle "intelligent" rear light http://www.lumicycle.com/accessories/tail-lights/insight-combination-brake-tail-light.html?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=insight&utm_campaign=InSight

I've just got to that stage where all my various rear lights are dying, and seem to have 'mislaid' one of my two trusty Hope Vision 1s. Having a surf on this thread makes me yet more determined to do away with the bloody battery powered things altogether and Dynamo Up All The Bikes.
There's even a rear dynamo light that brightens when you brake. Proper Nerdy.

There is even a rear dynamoless light that brightens when you brake. No batteries needed.

How did it work?

great idea
amazingly bad soundtracks....

How did it work?
According to their Kickstarter, it worked using eddy currents at the rims. It is not correct in calling them "dynamoless", it just uses a contactless dynamo. They claim they don't drain that much energy off, but that could be true for any modern dynamo (its up to them but they probably need less than the older ones since they use efficient lights). Eddy currents are actually used for contactless braking in some cases (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddy_current_brake) so they could arguably use almost all of the energy if they wanted to.

I've got a front light the post. I'll let you know if they're any good.

How did it work?
Well hopefully they do still work.
How?
Fuck nose.

you misspelled "joke".

Also, nobody really really understand how magnets work. They can predict behavior, they have good theories complete with experimental results backing it up regarding the things involved in magnetism, but nobody really knows at the basic level how the actually work.
Even if the physicists can get pretty close to understanding (I mean they have most of the pieces and the interactions etc [I think they are closer to understanding that than they are to understanding gravity]) for sure laypeople don't really understand. Definitely almost everyone criticizing the Insane Clown Posse didn't really understand how magnets work.
The ICP should be made fun of for thousands of reasons, but wondering how it is that magnets work should not be one of them.
In conclusion, I assumed you weren't making that tired dad "joke" especially since the correct line from that fine bit of rapping is "...how do they work".

Forum wisdom required.
I'm looking for a front light that's suitable for riding unlit country roads at pace. It's been done to death I'm sure, but can someone point me at the best light out of these.
Hope Vision 1 - £60
Lezyne Super Drive XL - £75
Exposure Joystick - £80Thanks

Vision 1 just for the ease of battery replacement; the rest two are USB charged and you dont want to be stuck without battery in dark in country lanes. You can keep AA batteries in your bag for Vision 1.
-
• #3369
Or get the eXposure Spark for the same reason
-
• #3370
Spark might not be bright enough
-
• #3371
Arguably none of the shortlisted lights will be bright enough to ride dark lanes at pace.
I've got an Exposure Diablo for this exact purpose.

A quick google suggests the 2013 Spark has 5 more lumens than the Hope 1/
(obv. these are fairly meaningless figures without comparing spread etc, but it should be the same) -

I know it's considerably more expensive but I was amazed when I changed from a Lezyne Superdrive, that was giving charging and switch problems, to an Exposure Strada. The Exposure light is great and comes with a remote switch you can attach to the brake hood.

you can attach to the brake hood.
pic?

Thanks for the replies.
I did look at the Spark, but the rubber band mount looked a bit flimsy. Is this the case? Any opinions on the Hope mount?
The Strada looks great, but too many £££'s for me. Basically I'm looking for a light that will allow me to extend my commute into the lanes after work. It'll just be for those couple of hours after sun down.
Get aero, get blinded.
