Super bright rear light? I've got about 4 miles of my commute in unlit, single-track lanes and the idea of getting shunted from behind into a dry stone wall at night is not the one.
Also, any forum preference between a Hope Vision 1 or an Exposure Spark/Joystick for a front light in the above-mentioned conditions?

You don't need a super bright light on unlit roads, even a modest one will do. Also, retro-reflective stuff will show up better once there's a car behind you. With all the potential failure modes for bike lights, two modest ones are always a better investment than one super-duper one.

My Smart Lunar Rear stopped working suddenly last week. I've found the wiggle receipt and it's from last december, so around 7 months old. Should I send it back? Not that bothered about a replacement, I didn't like it much and just got it initially as the pair were the same price as just the front, but since they offer a "limited lifetime warranty" perhaps they should have some feedback?

Also, I'd like to get a fibre flare, do they cope with being carried in everyday bags, ie. Getting squashed against and buried by a variety of objects? Slightly concerned how robust a bendy light is.

good question ^
i read somewhere they don't like it when left on seat post with no mudguards, but then i bet most lights (unmodded) will struggle.i think the flares are a good option for second light on the bag. flexi enough to not have to take it off at all.
retroflective stickers (mind there are plenty colours even black ones that are invisible on black rims etc. during day) are THE way for side visibility. dead on 90deg on bike visibility is next to 0.

I have abused mine no end and it is still holding up well (I am very good at breaking stuff). The bumf that you get when you buy it says not to bend it but I have ignored that, as do most owners AFAIK. The original ones had an issue with the ends pulling off the light bit but as far as I can tell this is now resolved.

.If you have them on the seatpost and they get wet you do have a problem in that water seeps into the battery compartment and shorts the battery so that they drain quickly. I get round this by taking the batteries out and drying them after I have been riding in the wet, to be fair this can happen with any light if seals are not seated correctly at least with this one you get used to checking it.
My fibre flare is my only rear light, I love it and would happily recommend it to anyone.

I have broken two Fibre Flares and I know I'm not the only one.

Basically works the same a fibre flare , I think.

not worth it.
the brighter it is - the less your eyes adjusted to the surrounding.
-
• #2272
^ Yep, all those people MTBing at night with bright lights have got it wrong. In fact why bother with lights at all? Just eat plenty of carrots and 'adjust to the the surrounding'.
-
• #2273
I find its better to wait for a full moon. That way I can avoid eating carrots.

I rely on my ears and scent to find my way around. Ride with eyes closed and it heightens the other senses right?
It's not payday today?
