  • After over 30 yrs on the planet I only just learned that Harry is short for Henry apparently. How the fuck does that work?

Heno maybe. Not Harry. That being short for Harold makes way more sense.

    Either way I can't believe I didn't know that.

here are some more from: http://www.moonzstuff.com/articles/nicknames.html

Strange Nicknames. Not all nicknames are obvious. For example, Polly, Patsy, Peggy, and Nancy are actually nicknames for Mary, Martha, Margaret, and Ann, respectively.

with the exception of peggy = margaret, which i knew, those are mindblowing

  • I hate my job, but stay here because it pays relatively well.... and I don't know if I could earn this much elsewhere....

    I am disappoint.

  • 'Hank' is an American variation, 'Harry' more of an English one, as far as I know. The origins of such variants are normally in phonetic simplification. The difficult double consonant 'nr' in 'Henry' gets worn down to 'rr', eliding the 'n'. Here, the 'r' is the stronger sound and is more likely to survive the elision. In another language with a less strong 'r', it could have been conceivable for the simplification either not to occur or for the outcome to be 'nn' for 'Henny' (which sounds like baby speak in English).

  • also i'm assuming you also knew jack=john (altho lots of people seem not to).

I didn't know many of those origins. Very interesting.

  • I love Twilight.

  • i have litespeed decals over what is really a universal full susser

  • Jack used to be a very common shorten version on John (strange considering its the same number of letters) so as my dad is called john a lot of older people used to assume I was named John after him but was called Jack to avoid confusion.

My Grandma Margaret was of course known as Nancy!! as thats how Margaret was shortened round here, just to simplify things.

  • dancing james' words give me hope

...and then you crashed and broke your clavicle. The moral of this tale is never to take hope from anything that James says.

  • I hope Cliveo lives a long and happy life.

Henry is originally a French name unlike the Saxon Harold. Henri was anglicised to Harry as phonetically they are not too far apart.

After Macmillan and Wilson we haven't seen too many Harold's around. Loads of Henrys though. Henrys by the dozen and even some Harrys who aren't Henrys.

  • Don't forget the Hooray variety as well.

  • Today I accidentally bought a 'Garage' record, and I actually kind of like it...

  • Not that kind of garage...

  • The .gifs thread makes the spinning wheel of doom appear on my computer and I am too technically inept to know why this happens or what to do about it.

  • Chirsh Crarsh wasn't kidding when he said that thread is mightier than your browser.

  • Just at work doing some facebook stalking and think I landed on a forumer.... I felt an odd sense of guilt.

  • I just Gooooogled the name of someone who stole a Strava KOM from me.

    { he crops up on the British Cycling website so I don't feel bad }

  • On the stolen bikes thread I often think that it's actually an intervention that's been staged.....

  • I just played a text based adventure game (my first) and got notably excited as I neared the end.
