  • no that sounds like you might be right: some dishing, but using the same length spokes. or something.

So the carrier / splines are like casstte ones... but for a single sprocket?

You can usually fit 1 - 6 sprockets on there. The only real difference from using a standard free-hub is the fact that the shorter free-hub body eliminates the need for dishing (and likely increases flange distance I suppose, which is also good).

....unless you push the non-drive side flange out increasing the bracing angle on this side. Then increase the non-drive side flange diameter, increasing the bracing angle still further. Seems weird.

Although it might have something to do with the fact that non-drive side spokes can loose tension due to drive disparity across the hub. This a bit (a lot) beyond my understanding though :(

  • Though it might look stupid weird, I'm guessing that via a propietary system of moving the cog further inboard or outboard, thereby being able to match the rear chainline, to practically any bb/crankset? Nifty.

Its just a shortened freehub system, the same as the chris king and hope single speed hubs. By moving spacers around, you dial in the chainline.

  • Quick hub question - anyone know if the SJS is exactly the same as Formula etc?

As the SJS say they can be respaced down to 110mm, so is this the same for formulas/system X, etc?

I just brought these, as far as I can tell they are the same. Seem pretty good for the price, nice bearings (although I don't know how long they will last?)

Also, was shocked when my lbs quoted me £75 for a box of spokes- I'm using cheap-as-chips hubs and re-using old rims. I don't think I need to spend more than the rest of my build on just spokes :(

  • Ok cool cheers. Broadens my choice a bit.

Jesus that is ridiculous though, you should be able to get spokes for approx. 10 per wheel online? How many were in the box!?!?

  • +1.I have one of the original prototype fixed/free LeVeL rear hubs and a front hub and I love them. Been going strong for 4 years now and haven't had to touch 'em. The only downside is that they aren't light. Not only is it easy to change the sprocket, but they are really easily swapped between 120 and 135 mm flange spacing by swapping the steel spacers. It's a 5min job at most.Oh, and Will at HubJub sells them, which means you get to give your money to a bloody lovely guy. Really, I can't recall ever dealing with a nicer guy to give my money to.There was a rumour that they were developing a freewheel mechanism that fits the InI three-bolt interface, but that's been going on for years with no sign of it yet.Having said all of that, I am planning on buying up a stock of sprockets just in case the company goes out of business.

Level did make a free wheel early early doors but it proved to be too expensive. I begged Scott Hansen to do it but I doubt it will happen any time soon. (Freewheels only increase the weight of your bike with the additional break).

    100, so 75p each.
Its a shame, cause they are a good shop and I want to support them, but I can get them from Parker online for 45p, and really I wan't something like the ACI Alpina double butted which cost 20p

  • Added LeafCycles Malaria, Charge Shaker, and the SRAM Torpedo.

All in the list on page 1. Plus a place to buy the Chub Hub in Europe.

  • For the single speeders out there. I just noticed this nice Woodman hub going cheap. 49 EURO, bargin.

  • Is that a lockring on the right hand side?

  • Wonder if you could respace that to 120 and turn it into an ISO hub?

  • its a lock ring for the cassette cog i think.

  • Is that a lockring on the right hand side?

I assumed it was this sort of thing. A splined sprocket slidding onto a externaly threaded freehub.

Wonder if you could respace that to 120 and turn it into an ISO hub?

I doubt it. Shame though, with the adjustability of the free-hub side it would make a nice fixed/free hub. Might work on a conversion. I run 135mm hubs on my 130mm spaced aluminium cross frame.

  • I saw quite a few hubs for mountain bikes (135mm) and/or with diskbrake fit. It seems I may need to think about adding a new section within the list just for those, and BMX-specific hubs too. But since we are mostly a roadie bunch, its not as high on my priorities as yet.....

  • we are not roadies, we ride in "mixed surfaces"

  • Where's Joe? He'd have laughed at that. Probably spilling his Horlicks.

  • Just added a new section in the list (page 1) for (EBBs) Eccentric Bottom Brackets.

Of course, it should be in the BB List shouldn't it.

    I'll move it later. ;)

  • There is of course the True Precision Poacher - with instant engagement - I use one of these on my MTB - awesome piece of kit. (they will deliver to the UK)

DMR revolver has been forgotten too - a true bargain.

  • I know there's been few threads like that and i know about the one "hubs available in uk" so please no stupid comments like "use the search button"
All previous threads are a bit out of date, hubs not available any more or prices changed.
I'm looking for a silver fix/free hub below 100£ and can't decide which one to go for:
    Halo
    Miche*
    Gran compe
    Surly
I found some opinions here on gran compe and miche but couldn't find anything about halo and surly.
Which one would be the best allround hub?

  • No point to a fix/free as you can put a freewheel on a double fixed.

Surly hubs and perceived value very specifically discussed here (UTFS)
Halo hubs also discussed in great detail with pics here (UTFS)

They are both bog standard Taiwan hubs and you would be better off with System Ex or Planet X which is same product.

They are both shit and overpriced.

  • Thanks, thread with surly hubs is not coming up in search.
I'll go maybe with gran compe - 60£ for a pair of double fixed.

  • I really believe you get what you pay for with Hubs, especially in the UK.

I do hear good stuff about Goldtec, but I've never used them.

I love my Phil's. Can HIGHLY recommend.
