From what I've heard/seen/experienced, the biggest hindrance to developing a good spin, or twiddle as it was once known, is spending all one's time riding big gears.
But if you don't want to spin, there's no point changing your set-up. Only something like a joint injury or getting wiped out by traffic due to sluggish acceleration might lead you to reconsider at a later date ;)
I can probably out-accelerate most people from a standing start over, say, 20m, even if I was on 81" and they were on 72". But I'd **never **be able to out-accelerate myself on a lower gear in the same situation.
All these bizarre velocentric machinations, and your claim to have been hanging around these parts for eons, makes me wonder if you're yet another aliased tynan... but your style of arguing doesn't quite gel. Hmmm...

:-) yeah I know that, I was giving you 103, else I'd have posted rather than edited (and then there would have been much pouting and stamping) :-P

So I guess my point is: you're going along as usual & the point at which you need to break grip is the same and has to happen before the lower gearing can have an effect.
The 'reverse' gearing takes effect as soon as you apply back-pressure on the pedals, or the rotation if the pedals (caused by the reverse gearing) catches up to your pedalling motion.
You would not need to start skidding, and could stop smoothly by resisting the rotation of the pedals.
More thought experiments! ;-) -

I'd be tempted to resort to my usual, "Grow up and Fuck Off." remark but fear you'd take it to heart.
