I forgot to mention, id been completley disregarding contacts because as far as I know, my eyes are too screwy to work with them.
I have quite a strong astigmatism (sp?) which couldnt be corrected with contacts last time I checked about 3 years ago.

yeah strong astigmatism will stop you having contacts. Shame.
Would you be able to have the laser treatment?
You could get sports glasses with prescription lenses. -

I've got astigmatism with the axis (?) falling halfway between the 2 standards available in toric lenses, so I just use normal lenses that correct the index (?) - still a million times better than my baseline vision.
I do only wear them for about 5 - 10 hours per week though (on the same day).

http://www.optilabs.com/ do pretty decent prescription cycling glasses. And they're cheap.[1]
[1] For values of 'cheap' that usually apply to either bike schwag or eyewear.

I've worn glasses all my life and it's rarely ever a problem when cycling. However, I'm fortunate enough to be hyperopic with a near null defect in one eye. When it rains, the glasses are often handy to keep splatter out of the eyes. If the rain gets too heavy then I just take them off. Being hyperopic means that I don't suffer any degredation in my operating vision for cycling without them. I've never had a problem with humidity/heat/sweat except when the nosepads are really new. However, I am careful about the type of pads that I get. As for crashing, I usually specify titanium frames and plastic scratch resistant lenses.

don't really seem that cheap, when you can get a good second hand pair of oakley's and get your optition to swap out the lenses.

I tend to cycle with glasses on... be it my normal ones, or contacts + sunglasses... I must admit to being lazy in the morning and just wearing my normal glasses as I can't be bothered putting contacts in.

My eyes are poor, I cannot see.... finding sunglasses for a -10 prescription with an astigmatism that doesn't work with contacts is really bloody difficult. I haven't yet found a half decent looking pair that I can use on the bike so i just ride in my normal glasses. No problems apart from rain on the lens.

I'm deaf, I'm short-sighted and not only that I have a condition called keratoconus on my left eye, used to wear contacts, but I like wearing glasses, especially big fuck-off "I'm wearing a glasses you cuntflap" one, and not those tiny frameless one that shout "oh I didn't realise I have glasses on".
Despite all this I'm still here ain't I? and I regularly commute 23 miles, sometime more a day.
I am too scared of wearing glasses. I always think I'll crash and break them and get glass in my eyes and go blind. Seriously.
paranoia, how often did people slip on a banana skin? that calamity suppose to happen everyday (especially in Beano) but only heard of stories about it (possibly fable), I never once in my life witnessed someone slipping on a banana skin.
grapes on the other hand are a bastard, drop a piles of them and you're rollerskating without the skates.

I got that eye-watering thing going - thought I had some 'issue', but I just needed to HTFU and stop crying. Or rather, get some wrap-around glasses with a clip in thing for when not wearing contacts, which you take off when wearing contacts. 3 Diff colour lenses too - all for 100 quids. Bit plasticcy, but do the job.
Weirdly - I had that kangaroo on a bike as my myspace [hangs head in shame & embarassment...] avatar. I will now pinch it for here...

i wear cycles.
sorry. glasses.i wish i had windscreen wipers on them 30 minutes ago.
-
• #40
Yes, why hasn't some bright spark invented some for spectacles?
-
• #41
i bet they're fucking patented and nobody can do anything yet.
-
• #42
google patent says no.
but, as we've talked about it now. we can't patent it.
better just get on inventing it. -
• #43
What about that water-repelling spray that moto riders use?

windscreen wipers would look much better.
perhaps with a comedy goldfish between two lenses as well. -

Aren't you just meant to rub a cut raw potato on the lenses?
Or a tiny smear of undiluted washing up liquid?
Or maybe get justMouse's man to run along side and wipe on command?

thought id ressurrect this thread to ask,
if anyone has had experience of using reactions (colour change) lenses on a bike?
Just bought myself a frame, impulse buy, half price but still expensive.
Need to get them glazed now.
Would quite like to wear em as normal glasses, so was thinking of a light grey lens.
But can also get Reactions lens for £5 more.
So can have black lens in the sun, and presumably clear indoors?
Not sure about always having black lenses out doors, dont want to look like I need a guide dog or something.
-

I didn't really like Reactions for everyday glasses, especially in the winter - the bright low sun triggers them quickly, but due to the cold ambient temperature, they take forever to untint when you go indoors or into shadow.
I do use them as my bike commuter glasses though - I switch to other glasses for indoors, and there aren't really any sections of my typical London riding that involve a transition from bright light to tree covered, pot-holed, high speed descents.

I had a classic 4 eyed moment tonight. cycling home- admittedly pissed- but glasses fail occurred and cycling down the mall(towards bckingham palace) and nailed a metal fence!
absolutely hilarious. the guys on security watch were terrified- and one was like 'we need better lights!' really nice guys- good laugh. ow- head first as well. but so much fun.
fucking olympics, grrrrrrr
Laser treatment sounds more and more appealing, and less and less risky as the years go by. Might have to think about it at some point. I like contacts for longer rides, but still find them awkward for day to day stuff due to them fucking up my minimum focal distance. I never realised how much I peered under or over my glasses to read small type until I first tried contacts.
And it's getting harder to find glasses that suit me/are comfortable as I start morphing into middle age.
Spectacles are cool though. Just like cigarettes :)
