if anyone's interested i might have some Marathons PLus's available in 32's.
I took mine off, simple cos of the weight, they are 800g each, compared to the ones i now have that are 220g each that's almost 4 x lighter !!I didn't realise, but ANY extra weight on the wheels makes a HUGE difference, it's not to be underestimated.
Admittedly not one puncture in 3 months, so that's good, but it's a massive trade off.

800g each? Fookin' 'ell.. how much? Maybe swap some chainrings :)

the tire is like one big chainring, impenetrable. 1.6KG in rubber ! shocking really isn't it.

Not when you carry a "spare tyre" around your waist.. I have a 500g(ish) 28mm Marathon on the rear of the Condor and it was like adding 2GI to the ride. Resistance training ftw.

That's what i thought you see, but now i feel like taking it easy for a while :)

Now I'm paranoid, let me find out what the Randonneur weight is.

Use: Road/City
Weight(g): 490, 550, 590
Bead: Wire Bead
TPI: 60
Puncture protection: Yes -

420g for an 32c Randonneur, that not bad, in that case the 28c is about 400g (can't find any info on the weight of an 28c Rand).

Who cares how much it weighs just fucking ride it.

I have a Gatorskin on the rear wheel which weight a mere 220g, hence the slight worried, surely that's jusified??
-
• #63
Its a tyre. A touring tyre. Even if it does weigh a couple of hundred grams more than your other one why is that worrying? Will you really notice the difference? Does it really matter? You're not racing on it.
-
• #64
I did actually when I had the Schwalbe Stelvio Plus 23c (340kg kelvar!) on my rear, ah well, I"ll get use to it netherless.

You might not want to waste precious energy rotating it.
Yes.
Maybe.
You've never ridden in the Commuter Cup? Tut tut -

Riding in London's famous London isn't exactly le tour now is it? My point is that the bike is still going to be lighter than one with gears even if ed were to use this tyre or not, I think its just being needlessly anal.
-

Needlessly anal would be worrying about the hubs weight since the rotating mass is right in the middle, thus you won't feel the excess weight of the hubs getting in the way.
Tyres weight, (At least I think so) are the most noticable when riding your bike due to the rotating mass, I don't want to go all C+ and I'm sure someone else here can able to explain it better than I can!
sure for bombing round London it's not exactly bothersome, but coming from Wimbledon to Clerkenwell regularly I did notice a slight 100g weight difference on the rear tyres!

i'd rather have longer lasting, they weight difference is hardly noticeable

+1 h-h-h-h-h htfu.

The tyres weight makes the whole bike feel different. Rotating weight when accelerating and climbing and gyroscopic weight when turning.
Might not make much difference when comparing a 200g tyre to a 240g tyre but when you are in the realms of 500g tyres then it makes a very big difference. It makes the bike bike feel sluggish.
Sluggish is not a problem for touring as the masses of additional weight/panniers etc,. are going to be a bigger problem and touring is what these tyres were designed for isn't it? -

Bought the mountain bike versions for my beater, only taken them round the block ... nice and quick, seem nice and thick as well, only £8 each from wiggle.
-
• #72
The more skids you do the lighter they get. : )
-
• #73
I fill my tyres with concrete. Now that's resistance training. HTFU.

seriously, put some heavy tires on and see for yourself. It's like cycling through a constant headwind. or a higher G.I. all the time.
It's annoying more than anything.i was riding 800g tyres though, pretty epic by any standard.

I know the point you were arguing. Just throwing one down from t'other side of the argument.
I'm using a 500g+ tyre on the Condor at the mo' so I'm actually in the "who cares what it weighs" camp. Before that though I used my commuter to destroy my old road bike tyres on.
I'd rather not p_nct_re so I run this. It makes a noticeable difference to the bike though so if you care about speed run fast tyres.
Do I even know what point I'm trying to make at this stage? Like fuck I do. :)
that was the idea... they are ok, no real complaints, think i should have got the 28s though.
