• I noticed that! have you noticed it photographs green or blue in different light?
looks a totally different colour. Mine is montana black "jade"

I'm up to £124 spent so far all in, reckon £150 to finish, but thats come mosty from selling an old mountain bike and a few pairs of old trainers on ebay lol.

see it when i started lol

  • I don't wanna count how much I've spent. No point, I've got the bug now so doubt this will be my last build, probably got enough bits and pieces for another already minus a frame.

  • Think im gonna do a geared road bike over the winter, now I'm a bit more confident.

  • Well if you need a loan of tools gimme a shout.

  • Don't get it from halfords ...it's shite, get it from the paint factors place around the back of bethnal green on tent street...they do single pack acrylic in cans that sprays really nicely..

I can put decals on if needed...I did a geurciotti for Dad on the forum and you can see the frame on my profile...if you want a hand thats cool too.

For decal application, do you prefer the frame built up, or bare without components?

Wingedangel, I’d also be interested in you applying decals to my frame as well – I’ll PM you too in case you don’t see this.

  • I like many of the colours and I am really thinking about getting this one redone! It is not the original color anyway...

what would be a good one for it?

  • Just finished spraying up every bit of my bike. I treated it to a gold chain too.

  • After my recent powdercoat at Armourtex the frame number was barely visible, so I attempted to scratch out the numbers with a sharp object. This worked, but the end result doesn't look great.

Could I apply some gasket remover to just strip the powdercoat and laquer from the rectangular area around the frame number, or would it be difficult to get a neat result?

I am thinking of applying vinyl printed sticker on top of armourtex powder coat and spraying clear lacquer. Google told me that clear on top of powder coating need to be 2 pack (epoxy or urethan I guess) but it didn't tell me why. Can it be single pack 2K clear like this do you think?

I tried this on car spoiler I repainted and the result was superb almost the same as 2 pack 2K clear, amazing smooth gloss without polishing after spraying.

By the way, do Armourtex do pearl flake clear coat? It is not on the price list and I feel I have seen the picture here but can't find it anymore.

  • Has anyone else had their frame, raw and clearcoated?

Do you have to have a blasted effect with PC to allow the paint to stick, or can you have a more polished look?

Yeah, I semi-polished my Claud Butler but left all the rust and discoloration in the pits, then clearcoated it with some spare 2pk.

It's not very durable though, even though I'm using proper stuff shot from a gun rather than rattlecans. Maybe the armourtex finish is better, or maybe it just doesn't stick to polished metal.

  • Durable shmurable, it looks well sussex.

  • Got this done a while back. Lined it myself, with a little help from my more artistic girlfriend!

  • First post...I joined after following a link from retrobike and noticed the comments about clear finishes over raw steel.
I don't know much about the frame. It had a tange sticker on it when I bought it,but it had been resprayed when I bought it.It was light and fitted me so I've never been bothered about the provenance.
I built it up with all new or NOS parts, apart from the Crane derailleur and a Kusuki stem.It has all Dura Ace (F/D,headset,cranks,seatpost,levers,shifters) or 600AX (hubs and brakes)parts with Velocity Synergy rims. The Nitto Rando bars have Velo Orange stitched bar covers. It's really good to ride,at its best on fast winding downhill runs.It was originally intended to be a "Sunday spin around the park" ride, but I enjoy riding it so much that it's usually ridden daily.
I had the fork chromed and a local powdercoater did the coating on the frame after I had it stripped. It looked great when it was first done, but 18 months later there are signs of rust under the coating. i thinks that's down to the skill of the powdercoaters. I usually go to a different place who has done some good work for me in the past but for this one,I took it to a place closer to home. The rust doesn't show in pics and it's pretty minor, but I'm going to have the current coating blasted off and get the old place to redo it,again in clear powdercoat.

  • That is very nice. How polished is the steel?

  • Never go to a Car body shop... if you can avoid it. Always a disapointment.

I sanded it down to 600 grit then used 0000 steel wool.I can just see my face in it,although it's blurry. The powdercoating reduced the gloss level a bit.

Hey I don't mind if the bike is built, though it's easier as a frame...

  • Niall, is that gold chain an Izumi Super Toughness? I just got one for my current project and it is fucking LOUD. Wanted to know what your thoughts were, if it is one

Just finished spraying up every bit of my bike. I treated it to a gold chain too.

  • lui, I also have the Super Toughness chain.
Agreed, it is probably the loudest chain out there!
To reduce the noise, slacken the chain slightly, lube, and ride it so that it beds in.

  • Thanks ebenzo, will try that. I don't mind the noise but the bike itself is visually loud as well so I don't want to be like a two wheel Blitzkrieg on the senses.

  • Actually, I am happy that my bike makes at least some noise...otherwise careless pedestrians have no idea there's something coming their way!

  • hahaha true dat, and the manly rattle of the super toughness is so much more threatening than a "ding ding!"

To answer my own question, I filed and sanded down the area around the frame number, then covered it in clear nail varnish to stop any rust. It's makes the number very readable and looks reasonably neat:

  • Looks pretty good like that.

    Also Phil BB?
