• I have still this SLX road frame, Probably pinarello.
I am not shure if im going to build it up.

  • fixie people?

    Blah blah.

Blah will handle like a bizarre whippet.

    Quality.

  • Hello fixie people!

I'm currently building my first fixie, and I'm using an old Triumph touring frame that I bought when I was 10. Fotunately I haven't grown much since then so it still fits. Anyway, Now that I've ridden it a few thousand miles, and now stripped off the gear mechs, the brakes, and the mudguards an everything, the original red paint is a bit chipped and faded. I either want to touch it up very accurately, or take the paint off. I can't see the point for a cheap conversion to pay for a powdercoat or anything. Has anybody else tryed to strip all of the paint off? Does it look at all good? I'm really quite stuch about this :/

    Anything appreciated
    Luke

A DIY paintjob doesn't really pay off (rattlecans are as much an Armourtex job) and I think stripping would make it rust.

  • Luke, are you 12?

    Sincerely,
    the Fixie People

    Close enough, 15 acctually

  • What's a 'fixie'? :-$

  • does anyone know if there is a minimum spend at armourtex? i just need my frame laquered, which if i recall is £15?
a bit of a late reply but minimum spend is £45, as you said laquers are £15.

If you are on a budget, have a lot of time and you want to try, then why not.
I have done with paint remover or stripper twice before and, I warn you it is a painful task - literally your skin will be in pain if touched with the stripper.
Normally the paint will not come off in one go so you need several times then you will need to sand it off with sand paper by hand (if you don't have power tool with appropriate tools).
Then, prime with etching primer, sand smooth again then paint with top coat if solid, if you opt for metallic you will need clear lacquer on top.

If you buy all these, stripper, degreaser, primer, colour, lacquer, it is already £30ish plus sand papers and your full one to two days.
If it is your first time paint job, unless you are genius, your un-satisfaction is almost guaranteed and most of the case your frame will start rust soon.

If Armourtex can do all for £49 (solid? collect?) it is well worth it - their finish is fab.
At least I feel this way after I got my frame back from them.

  • Thank you kindly. A lot of thought went into that paint choice I can tell you! And even then it was not exactly what I was expecting, though still very nice, so it just goes to show that it's not 100% controllable.

FWIW Mercian do a colour called 'Bianchi Blue', if you decided you wanted to splash some cash on a nice enamel paintjob. No. 35:

    Hi,
i'm going to respray my guerciotti frame in France and I want to do with the colour n°63. I think is the same colour in the motta frame.
    .

    Someone knows the RAL number?
    cheers.

  • believe me, a 'fixie' touring frame from the 50's will handle like a bizarre whippet.

    no it won't.

  • i've copied and pasted this from another thread cos this is relevant for this thread too - Basically, i'm doing a custom paint job. the hubs im wanting to paint are chrome, do i need to use paintstripper or something similar to get the finish off or can i just spray paint straight on top?

looks like you have to scratch the paint. though. if you want to get them done in black armourtex will sand/shot blast. and then powdercoat.

  • my original plan was to armourtex them, but i haven't found anyone wanting to do a group thing for ages on the forum, and paying £50 for a pair of hubs to be painted is tooo expensive

  • why dont you start a group thing?

  • looks like ral 3020 as an insecure observation... i call those colours tabaque and
i separate them to yellowish (classical, 70s) and reddish (eastern, 00s)
if you choose them from samples avoid the bright light when you decide the brightness.

  • This is one we did a while back Ral 6018

    http://www.northlondoncoatings.co.uk/images/gallery/gallery006.jpg

We have now teamed up with http://www.pitstopdesigns.co.uk/index.htm who offer carbon effect finish to any colour plus many other effects

  • Do you do bikes regularly and what are your prices like?

Even though Edmonton is a little bit out of London, you might get customers from on here if you are bike-friendly.

  • We do have a min cost of £50 pounds but i'm sure we could offer your members a discount and do a frame and forks for £40 for 1 colour and either 1 sparkle or Clear Lacquer coat.

    Most ral colours in stock.

The only thing we do not off is a sand blasting service but we do have a blasting cabinet that we could remove minor peace's from your frames free of charge

Are the hubs chrome? or are they alloy? if they are chrome then blast over them with a metal pan scourer, and then some wet and dry...you have to scratch up the chrome, and to get into the corners the pan scourer will be easier, then if you can get the soft sanding blocks from a hardware store they are good to...the chrome needs to look hazy if the paint is going to stay on for more than 3-4 months without chipping.
you can then use a primer and a top coat, after you have primed them leave then a day or two and for the next couple of days 'cook' them slightly with a hair dryer.
'dry flat' them back (also known as nibbing) and then you can apply topcoat.

always do two or three thin coats, rather than one thick...

if the hubs are alloy, then you do the same however ideally you will need an etch primer, as the alloy doesn't like the paint and they will flake sooner.

Cheap refinishing merchants, will sell you the etch primer and the sanding blocks, use a mask with etch as it's poisonous and use gloves as it's acid based...

or if you don't want them to last for ever...molotov.

  • ^ thanks for the help, i went the ultra budget and quick way of just painting them with black car paint over the chrome, as far as i know they were alloy. i'll see how long my DIY job lasts!

  • RAL 9003 – Signalweiss

    Armourtex are awesome.
