• Get in there with a dremel and file it out. I did that on my my first fixed frame as the paint was way too thick.

  • What he said. The dropouts will get scratched and often a bit rusty with any frame. There is no way you will be able to keep that part of the frame immaculate looking.

  • RAL 9001 with metal flake lacquer.

Who needs kickstands when you've got a perfectly good wooden mallet?

Over. I'm going to get some of that 3m automotive clear protective film and seal it with that. Not perfect - but will do the job.

Hmm was going to respray black but... I saw Armourtec do heat stripping to steel frames before they repaint.. what do they look like after they come out of that? would it be something interesting to clearcoat?

I work for 3M if you need some

  • dropped my fuji and forks off today to go RAL 5015, much to the dismay of buddha (i'm sure)

will post up pictures as soon as i get it back, and i hopefully won't have any horror stories to tell afterwards.

  • has anyone on here, this specific thread or the forum in it's entirety, have experience of removing braze-ons and other lumps of metal that are attached to the bike that won't be needed?

is in need of some attention and i'm certain i want to remove the bits that aren't necessary anymore. powdercoating will be taking place and then something like

Most threads will just go on about killing puppies or tell you to use the search. The best way I've found to remove braze-ons is to braze them back off again. Get a cheap plumbers blow-torch from B&Q (£13?). Go outside. Heat up said braze-on til it's glowing orange. While it's glowing orange and with the tip of the flame still in place, twist the braze-on off. They come off very easily - no need to force it - if you do have to force it, it's not hot enough. Keep the residue braze hot, and 'rub' or 'scrape' very gently with something like an old knife, and flick it off - careful not to have it land on you! Then if it needs it, just wet'n'dry the surface to remove any remaining spikes. Very quick and easy actually once you done it a couple of times.

  • will that take off cable guides and, jesus save me, the bits that let a pump be slung under the top tube?

  • IME - yup.

  • right then. blowtorch it is.....

  • Failing that a hacksaw, a file and a lot of spare time.

  • I probably don't need to point this out, but I will anyway just in case! If you do use the 'braze-off' method, only do it if you are definately getting a respray or a powdercoat, as it will destroy your paintwork!

  • where as an angle grinder will gently caress your frame like a sweedish masuse, and leave the paint in pristine condition.

  • it's alright, i'll use some inverse shims to restore any grind marks.

    Fair point :-)

  • got it! sorry for the crap pic, taken on my blackberry
