You can't get decals done because of the heat involved, it's not a wet spray.

I've just got my frame done and I love the colour. I got a lacquer on top too.
When I got home to inspect it properly I noticed that the paintwork didn't really coat the edges around ALL the lugwork. Every edge is much thinner in paint/powder coat. Bit worried if this becomes weak over time and then starts to rust at these points.
Is this normal? Anyone else had this issue?

How much do they charge for a bead blast and clear coat? Same as a single colour?
-
• #1082
Does anyone know whether they can clear any rust on the inside of the frame by shot blasting it?
-
• #1083
Imagine it's possible (to clear rust) on the inside of the seattube and headtube - doubt anywhere else. Not sure if it might damage the bb threads / headset seats though.
They did a good job getting old flux/rust off mine when I took it there to be painted.

Chalfie, do you know of any example images of silver cranks that have been coated black and how they've turned out, i'd consider it

one set in matt black
had the previous set done in gloss black, both works best if consistent with other components on your bike.
both where hard wearing and hold up good, same as anodised, maybe a bit more resilient due to its thick coat.

bit of a n00b question but do you HAVE to take out BB and headset before you send it for paint there?

Where does it say that? Their price list says to remove bottom bracket and bearing cups.

Because people can't read a few posts above them...
Just got this email from Armourtex if anyone is interested in latest prices / info:
Armourtex cycles is now open,we have a fully equipped cycle shop offering spares and our own new custom built bikes, also repair bays with fully trained mechanics that will do everything from a full strip down (for respray) to removal of small parts that you may find difficult i.e.. bottom bracket or head set.

*The charges for strip down, service ,Punctures or other repairs to bicycles are available from our shop manager 0208 986 2028.*The powder coating charges are as follows:
We will remove all the old paint, shot blast, prep and mask your frame prior to powder coating.
The prices including vat are as follows Steel frames are £59.25 or £75.25 with a further powder coated Lacquer.
Aluminium prices are slightly more £65.50 and £82.00. We do a few more expensive colours or metallic lacquer which cost more.
Should you require extra components powder coated the same colour as the frame and forks then they will be priced up per item i.e a seat post would be £6.00, if you want additional components in a different colour then the price will be an extra £49 as this is our min charge per colour.
The advantages of having a lacquer coat on the frame are that it will look nicer and be easier to keep clean, the lacquer is also quite hard wearing. You can not have decals put under the lacquer coat as this also requires heat to cure.
The turn around times for steel frames is usually 3 working days, Aluminium frames are 5 days. there is no need to phone and pre book, just come to our reception any time Monday to Friday am to pm, or on a Saturday 10am to 4pm.
Further information and an RAL colour chart can be found on our web site www.armourtexltd.co.uk . We do not stock all RAL colours but our range is quite extensive and we have samples on display in our cycle shop to help you with your colour selection.
You can send your frame to us with all instructions and contact details we will return your frame by courier once paid for in full. (courier charges to most uk locations are currently £20 +vat)

They charge around £25 for the removal of both. Given the resources of this forum, you'd be better off borrowing the necessary tools from someone on here... hence my saying yes.

has anybody ever done a matte metallic kind of finish? I'd like to see some photos for reference/inspiration.

I've done a full strip down of my frame and forks, with the exception of the start nut that's inside the steerer. Does anyone know if that needs to be removed before they paint the fork?
-
• #1100
I doubt it as that bit doesn't get coated/painted. Pretty sure I've had forks done with the star nut still in there.
"You can not have decals put under the lacquer coat as this also requires heat to cure."
^that's a bit rubbish how does everyone do decals under the clear coat then?
Are there any other London powder coater options? Does anyone know who 14bike co used to paint their frames?
