  • so despite a quite good price you lowballed the seller?

  • It wasn't a low ball. It was an offer to do a cash transaction outside of eBay that would've meant he ended up with the same amount.

  • but that's against ebay rules..

  • hang him

  • That is why I removed an offer on them haha. A bit too flimsy for 80KG!

I guess it wouldn't be a good idea for me to make an offer...

  • Although Tester says I can get by on 20/20...

  • you can build lighter wheels for less than that

  • Ain't nobody got time fo dat.

    HHSB ride in 10 days.

  • Ok, so the front mtb idea is good, but needed a reality check.
9x1 axle is not very common in lightweight front disc hubs, therefore I enquired with mack..
Front mtb spaced to 120mm with female bolts pre-made just makes sense, plus with current gbp to zloty can't go wrong.
Superlight road front + super light low flange disc mtb, both together are a hopeful 147g altogether - I allowed 20g for female bolt conversion, not sure how far off I am here.

Kinlin rims are a better bet than stan ironcross, they are cheaper and have a deeper profile, which shortens the spokes, even if by little it still it counts... rims are not eyeleted but oh well.

Spokes will be x-lite ti, with 2.6g per 260mm.
No rim tape, definitely leccy tape and maybe veloplugs, depending on how much they are and how much they weight too - I just checked its 5g per 32 pcs so they're out, leccy is the same (5g per meter) but I already have electrical tape.

  • front no skewer
    hub50 + spokes62 + rim375 + nippies8 + tape5 = a lovely round 500g.
    *rear no bolts *
    hub83 + spokes 73 + 375 + nippies 8.5 + tape 5 = 544.5g

  • its all rounded a bit, the road hub is 47g but to allow fluctuations etc.

  • Terrifyingly light.

  • Interested to know where this is going? Also interested to find out how much them spokes are .. the last ones I bought (DT Swiss) where terrifyingly expensive, but I only needed a few for a non wheel related project and it was a cheaper option then buying the minimium quantity of Ti wire in that grade

  • they will probably cost a bit.
This is a project rather than a buy, so a financial plan with buying bits in parts every month is definitely considered - finally can utilise my grown-in scrimpiness to find out, if making a silly light wheelset on a medium budget with widely available components is possible.

  • I am buying a kitchen scale btw

  • thinking of it now I would probably have to use double layer of the electrical tape to prevent punctures, so might go for yellow veloplugs in the end.
    how much are they anyway?
    goes off to check

  • 15 euro?!?!?!?!?!

  • ok 10 quid from ebay.
    still quite pricey.
    looks at electrical tape

  • Although Tester says I can get by on 20/20...

    ?

  • ^^ Velo plugs .. http://www.justridingalong.com/veloplugs.html .. £10

Know anyone with a roll of Stans Yellow leftover? I'm sure one wrap is approx 5g

  • I'm not really sure electrical tape is a viable long term option. Won't it just run eventually?

Go for veloplugs. You can reuse them.

  • no tubeless/stan owning mates I am afraid.
I will use veloplugs I think, only because of weight - leccy tape is fine as long as its overlapping, keep in mind its stretchy and glues well to itself, plus the pressure keeps it nice and tight anyway.
now, after clicking Oswald's link, I am thinking about the ztr rims again, they look so nice.
and lack of braking surface too, which is great.
I opted for kinlins due to the fact that the profile is deeper, thus spokes shorter - its 1mm a spoke, but the question is are ironcrosses really 80 quid better?

  • time to sell some stuff.

  • but the question is are ironcrosses really 80 quid better?

If you're worrying about the price you've answered your own question.

Although aren't the stan's wider as well?

I would go the KinLin route for what it sounds like you're trying to do. What drilling are you going for? As one of the questions you need to work out is whether you'd save weight by reducing the number of spokes/length and increasing the rim depth.

The XR19W is ~23g heavier, but also a bit stronger (apparently).

For reference my ACI DB spokes were 6-7g each for x3 build with 19.5mm deep rims. So if you were doing it cheaply and not using WW spokes, you'd probably need to drop 4h... so I reckon it probably will roughly stay equal. From what I can work out where you get more returns is lower spoke count +WW spokes.

  • well after shipping and taxes and customs the difference reduces to 28quid, so I am just wondering now..stans are wider, 23mm outer, but they-re just 17.5m deep, whereas kinlins are 21.5mm. As mentioned in my prev post, that difference could shave off some weight of the spokes too, however it is a 100th of a gram per spoke, so bit silly innit..
drilling would be 24/28, so not too much room to reduce spoke count as I am 75/80kg.

The 19w is over 400g, if I considered this I could as well just go for ringle assaults or open pros. Note both rims considered are around 375g mark.
