  • Yeah, no way I'd use a straight on my bonce!

  • I’ve started trying various creams as my stock of arko soap finally ran out, it’s taken 7 years.

So far I’ve tried a sample set from trufitt and hill and was impressed, a little goes a long way and not as drying as soap. I’ve also tried Harry’s shave cream which was rubbish. I’m currently using Acqua di Parma shave cream tub, which is very nice but expensive. Will go back to T&H when it runs out.

  • Would anyone like this MÜHLE safety razor? I haven’t used it since 2017 when I got a new electric and I don’t see myself ever going back to wet shaving. Pick-up from N8
    Edit: this has gone

  • Hi, if nobody collects this, would you post if I paid? Only use cartridges, but fancy trying one of these.

  • I've recently switched to a DE razor and shaving soap after years of cartridge razors and gel.
Wish I had done it sooner! Thanks to @lookitsluke for recommending the Muhle Aloe Vera.

Does anyone use a pre shave oil before lathering with soap/cream? Does it make much difference?

  • Not really - I have a daily face wash I use, then a soak a microfibre towel in hot water and hold for about a minute before then doing a 2/3 pass shave

  • Cheers - I'll try the hot towel method.

  • Should probably add that I do a cold towel at the end to close the pores up

  • I had my first wet shave in forever. Was kind of concerned I'd catch the scar on my chin but it was fine with the Merkur. First go with the Taylor of Bond Street Grapefruit shaving creme. Very nice.

  • Has anyone used any of the Muhle Grapefruit and Mint range?

  • I've had several years of using a Muhle safety razor and been relatively happy with the swap from multi blade cartridges.

After seeing advert videos of the Henson razors I decided to give one a try. Went with the AL13. With the last of my usual blades fitted in it, the shave is a nicer experience, with less pulling and less nicks. I think a slightly closer shave too. Shave No3 was definitely better than I'm used to as the Muhle normally feels to be quite blunt by then.

    Edit. Now gone
If anyone fancies the Muhle (wooden handled one), for the price of postage, it will save it being stashed away unused. I'll put in a 5 pack of RX blades

  • still using my wahl professional hair clippers for shaving once or twice per week, £25 about 20 years ago. 1 set of new blades have been bought in that time. not as close as wet shave obvs but does a very good job and no need for gels soaps blades razors, also free hair cuts whenever i feel like it. set the blades right and there is no rash nicks cuts or razor burn.

£35 cost for two decades of shaving and haircuts can't really fault it

  • actually when i travel i take disposable razors, an erasmic style shaving stick / lather bringer and a shaving brush.
so a few more quid that stated above. the shaving stick and brush are 20+ years old but very rarely get used.

  • Nice offer! I'm tempted by that, but I already have the Edwin Jagger, which is exactly the same head as far as I can work out.

  • How do you store your styptic pencils?

I have these blue nix ones and they quickly break and turn into a mush.

  • Dry it on tissue before capping and store with the wetted end downward.

It's just a salt stick, so will absorb any moisture and turn to mush given half a chance.

    There's roll on styptic pens

  • Cheers

  • Can anyone make use of either of these? I'd rather not relegate the badger brush to keyboard cleaning duties! Both clean and cared for.

    *brush now taken.

  • Happily take the brush!

  • I never thought of using an old brush to clean the keyboard, excellent upcycling. I have been wrapping a cleaning tissue round a ruler (for the keyboard).

  • Recently ran out of blades and used one of Mrs EBs Gillette Blue III disposables. Wow, what a revelation! Absolutely perfect smooth shave no dragging no nicks. Got me questioning double edge safety shenanigans!

  • Cartridge razors are incredible if you shave everyday and have no problem with money and plastic use.

For me, who shaves once every five days or so and has a very manly thick beard, they just can't cope. The gaps between the blades get clogged and it just don't work plus gives awful rash.

For me and how I do facial hair I would never go back from a straight razor or kamisori.

Over a decade now and counting

  • Yep, this is why I moved to a safety razor years ago. I couldn't get through one shave without a disposable or cartridge razor getting clogged up halfway through.

  • I still have a Gillette Mac3 for travelling and am always impressed with the shave from a fresh blade.

The problems for me are with my thick stubble the blades blunt quickly and the cost.

Now with hybrid working I can shave every other week day, I can probably get a couple of weeks out of a safety razor - especially as you can remove them to clean and flip them.

  • It looks like I’m taking up shaving again. TBH I shave as little as possible as I hate it, but I hate my hairy face and Liz said last night that I look like a Planet of the Apes version of Capt Birdseye So recommend me a nice shaving soap to make the process a little less awful. I still have a good brush and a half decent razor in the cupboard. Cheers ta.
