• I'd wait for something to pop up second had, you'll get way more bike for your money.

No warranty make it slightly less bang for your buck.

  • What are peoples opinions on the Planet X Pro Carbon Shiman Ultegra bikes, worth the money or avoid?

    http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBPXSLPULT2/planet_x_pro_carbon_shimano_ultegra_road_bike

I can buy one and expense it.

I've got a Pro Carbon with an odd Ultegra/XT mixed groupset. I like it - it's light, it's stiff, and the only problem I've had is a touch of fork flutter at speeds of over 50mph.

While the Planet X is only old-school 10 speed Ultegra rather than 11 speed, that's reflected in the price. One of my clerks got the Ultegra model you've linked to, on my recommendation, as his first proper road bike and he loves it. It's fantastic value for money, and in my book would be worth upgrading in the future.

  • Only a touch of flutter - mild palpitations rather than total cardiac arrest.

  • Hey all

Just wanted to find out if its possible to buy a complete fixie for £200?

I have seen a lot, in particular these mafiabikes!

Keen to grab some advice :)

  • I'm taking it you won't be collecting components and building it for £200 total?

  • buy cheap, buy twice

  • Bare sweet fixehs for $200 yo.

  • Yes but don't buy a new bike for £200.

Build one on a budget or wait for something to show up second hand.

  • even less!

My GF had one of these, I've moved the parts onto a better frame since.

heavy frame, but parts are acceptable, sealed hubs and bottom bracket, decent cranks.

For £200, you could replace the tyres for something better.

+1, you can build something quite rideable and a lot less nickable , with a lot more character for that money.

A mate from college bought one of these, I found the finish to be quite poor. I wasn't expecting anything very good though so if you have low standards then I suppose it would be fine. That's not a dig at anyone by the way.

At the end of the day, you pay for what you get and that really applies with bicycles. If I were you I would trawl the classifieds on here, gumtree, ebay etc. you should be able to find a nice and respectable steel conversion for 200 odd.

  • Finish in terms of what? Paint? Components? Build?

  • I dont have the tools / space to build a bike here :(

  • Can't cross post, but go on Gumtree, type in "charge plug", call up one within your budget, and go view it. They're good bikes. I can see a couple up now.

  • Finish in terms of what? Paint? Components? Build?

From what I can remember the crankset, chain and hubs looked crap. I can't remember much else other than it was obviously thrown together any old way by the shop and my mate didn't know any better. This was 2011 actually so they might have made changes possibly. Have I just nullified my own point?

  • I think you guys have got the right idea. After a full bike, im a bit confused though.

So the charge plug is good. Im not going to be a hardcore rider, just to explore and enjoy. Do these types of complete bikes really break?

  • I don't think they break per say, however the components arent good quality and won't last very long!

A few of my friends have Charge Plugs, go for that!

Will depend how often you used it too. A cheap thing like the Viking one used every now and again won't be too bad.

  • The new ones for £200 are usually quite shit, you've got to get the price that way somehow and it's usually a combination of cheap, heavy frame and then crappy parts, the crappy parts are the worse bit as they can go wrong. You'll get a lot more value getting something second hand, for £200 you'll hopefully be getting a £400 or more new bike so the parts will likely be low end but not the kind of shit that are solely chosen to keep prices down.

Was it a Viking though, or a create/no logo/something else?

The reason I suggested the viking is that the wheels seem decent (formula type sealed hubs) reasonable rims, could do with a re-tension at the LBS of course, and chunky unbranded sugino cranks (i think) with a sealed bearing BB, and what look like unbranded Tektro brakes. You could probably spend £150 on those parts alone.

    Ahhh ok I see :)

great ill keep my eyes open. Its actually quite hard to find a bike when you budget is crap :(

£400 is the average for a decent budget bicycle.

£200 is what you'd pay for a decent bicycle 15 years ago.

  • get the ebay viking at £160, it's cheap but it'll be fine.

  • I've serviced a Viking not long ago.

The biggest issues is that it's put together by the customer rather than a qualified mechanic, which IMHO is the main cause of failure.

It's feasible to put it together properly to make it just about work as a pub bike, but that's about as much as it's capable of.

  • Is this a good bike?

He said its a raleigh frame.

    I really like it!! thoughts?
