  • It is happening on the outside of the tube that goes against the tyre. There is one circle joined where valve is and another opposite for some reason. There is on Conti tubes any way. Looking at other tubes they don't seem to be made the same!
I have put a bigger one in now so will see how that goes as definitely not a tyre problem.

  • Ah, right. Have you checked the tyre VERY closely for a sliver of wire or similar?
I once had a tricky recurring flat that was caused by a staple that was invisible from the outside of the tyre and only present to the touch on the inside when you really flexed the tyre.. WAC!

  • Yes I have thoroughly checked the tyre. I suppose a good test would be to move the tyre around half a turn so if it were the tyre it would cause a puncture on opposite side.

And I was expecting your response to be "your own fault for using conti tubes" :-)

  • Nah, I've used Conti tubes. Unlike their tyres they seem fine.

  • They probably outsource the manufacture to Asia :)

  • Well the inner tube did any way. I got home last night and decided to pup the tyre up to 60psi. No idea what it should go to I have only had the bike four weeks and its been OK at that pressure so 60psi it was.

About 2:00AM I heard a massive clap sound. Wasnt really like a bang more of a clap but it was so loud I must have lifted about 2 foot of the bed and so did the other half!

Though better check to see whats caused that, thought maybe the bike had fallen over but no it looked OK at the time, checked all windows no one decided to put a brick through, dunno why they would but hey ho. Looked out side to see if any cars had crashed and nothing. So back to bed.

Just as I went to take the bike out this morning I noticed the front tyre as flat as a flat tyre! So thats what the bloody noise was my inner tube exploding.

On the bright side it didn't happen as I was going round a bent with a big lorry next to me and I got to take the mountain bike for a spin (first time this year) before Sundays MTB ride.

Parts of any one elses bike ever exploded in the middle of the night?

  • My cock exploded once. Well not really just the condom I had on it but you get the point...

  • This has happened to everyone.

YOU ARE NOT A BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE SNOWFLAKE.

  • Title made me laugh a little.

This has also happened to me. A couple of years ago at about 7:30 in the morning. Unknown to myself, the tyre had a small rip in, I pumped it up using my track pump... decided to have a little look and it exploded close to my face. I woke up my housesmates and couldn't hear properly for a while. Good times.

  • A friend of mine was working with me as a Bike Doctor in 2005 and when he was pumping up a customers tires when one exploded and the shock made him jump about six foot back. Very funny.

I've had a middle of the night explosion, as is usual the culprit was the inner pinched between the tire and the rim. I now know the right way to mount tough tires onto deep rims using levers.

  • This has happened to everyone.

YOU ARE NOT A BEAUTIFUL AND UNIQUE SNOWFLAKE.

C'mon now, everyone is more unique than a snowflake. I'll conceed the point that we aren't all beautiful though. In fact it's probably time to have a cull of all of the ugly members, starting with you...

    ... and ending with me.

  • I now know the right way to mount tough tires onto deep rims using levers.

I'm pretty sure that people who know better than me have said that you shouldn't ever use levers to put tyres onto rims, as it is more likely to cause pinching which can lead to exploding tubes. This does mean that I occasionally need help from passing small girls (or Nhatt) to help me get the tyre back on. Strong I am not.

  • i killed 2 inners before I even got the tyre on a couple of weeks ago. My blood boiled.

  • Tyre exploded while using a garage forecourt pump. V-funny, the security guards thought it was a bomb!

    Are you calling me big?

  • Everyone has been very nice today, actually, so I don't mind it that much, but it has been a constant influx of people at least 4 people deep.

Say hi next time your in the shop, spy, I'm the large blonde tattooed woman.

I'm so bad. how can I remember this but not the key to the fahg mini I carried with me to erith on sunday?

  • Ah, I was refering to a conversation Mashton and I had at TNRC a few nights ago.

I got told off by my co-workers for telling some bloke that he's "kind of a big guy and should think about how he wants to ride before buying a bike"

Evidently you can't say that to a bloke. His face did fall a few feet, mind you.

  • not to men blokes with a beer gut in lycra you can't...

  • I'm pretty sure that people who know better than me have said that you shouldn't ever use levers to put tyres onto rims.

    Then do it properly.

Start by putting in the tyre 6 o'clock from the valve.

As you move along up to the valve (putting them in side by side with your hand), when you're nearing to the valve, push the valve itself inward to shove the inner tube into the tyre so it'll be out of the way of the lever.

Then use tyre lever to push the final bit of tyre in (if you find it too hard with your thumb).

When that's done, pump it up a bit, then check by grabbing the tyre to reveal the rims tape - if there's no black inner tube peaking out between the rims and the tyres, now you can pump it up properly.

  • Hey, I got a new (to me) second hand bike t'other day and so far I've had three punctures. I'm not riding it any differently to my old road bike (not hitting potholes or jumping up kerbs) but three punctures in as many weeks seems a bit excessive.

I've checked the inside of the tyre for sharp bits, made sure I'm not pinching the inner tube when I put it in... any suggestions? Is it because, at 15.5 stone, I'm too heavy for my bike/tyre combo?

  • I've checked the inside of the tyre for sharp bits

have you also checked the rim? spokes poking out? when you get a flat, check where in the tube the puncture is, the answer might be there...

  • Tyres need to be well pumped up to avoid punctures. Do you have a track pump? A portable pump may not be giving you enough pressure.

  • check the puncture proof tyre thread

  • Yeah, you have shit tyres... Not good...

  • Glasso, you heard the man. Your tyres are shit. You have shit tyres.
