no way

They do that a lot. I ordered a light bracket from them for £2.99 with free postage, it came in a box that size which must have wiped out their profits for the sale.

This machine calculates the size of each order and then folds the cardboard box to fitFrom Chain Reaction Cycles - behind the scenes
The company only have two sizes of cardboard box. Orders are put into one or the other, depending on size, and the lid is left open. The box then enters an amazing machine which works out the size of the order and custom scores and folds the box to fit. A postage label is then affixed and the package is ready to be dispatched.

Not only must that be costly for them, I'm also unable to (easily) reuse the box...
Plus I'll have second thoughts about ordering from CRC if it'll means a trip to the collection office again. Horrible place.

Dont know about CRC specific, but most retailers have a fixed contract (scaled, bulk weight, no. of shipments etc.) with their delivery partner and usually it is already considered a sunk cost when the contract is signed hence they do not care much what the dimensions are when they send their items.

It seems weird, but they know what they are doing. Imagine the labour cost of putting those into a little jiffy bag, closing and labelling it by hand. Mechanising their packing is one of the ways they can offer free p&p even on small orders.

That pic's tiny AP. What is it? A fishing reel?
-
• #819
Yep, my ride along the Ravensbourne river yesterday has made me want to give up cycling and take up fishing.

I was invited to go fishing with a speargun last friday. Seemed like a very unfair sport to me.
Does a DA reel offer smooth reeling, while helping to keep total rod weight down?
