  • In the business world I believe many old taboos remain, not just in the UK but internationally...

I'm not sure what the "business world" means. But I run a business and it really isn't an issue for me, the people who work for me or the people I come into contact with on a daily basis. Maybe I'm being naive (although I've been tattooed for 30 years and worked for nearly as long), but I don't come across it as a problem.

  • the service industry and YOUR MUM

Aren't these one and the same thing?!

  • ^ there's cream for that, Savlon maybe...

I currently work for one of the biggest AEC companies worldwide, and grew up in the far east which gave me an appreciation of their culture and way of doing things.

If I decided to stay in this industry, I don't think walking into a meeting, say in Japan, with visible tattoos, would be ideal. Well, I don't think it would happen.

Of course everyone has a different opinion and different experiences of the matter, I'm not sure why you are debating it. Tattoos are a very personal thing in many ways.

If I found myself happy working in an industry where I thought unconcealable tattoos would not affect my future dealings in any way then I would progress to my forearms..... What business is it that you're in?

  • tattoos are for society drop-outs, freaks and ne'er do wells. no one with a tattoo will ever succeed in this society. sorry.

    Burn!

  • Well, that may not be far from the truth,
yet maybe a lot of tattooed people don't feel the urge to succeed in 'this' society in the first place?

I would assume the 'city' investment banking and the like.. if you turn up to an interview showing ink.. there's really no damned chance of getting the job.

In the City and in law I'd imagine you'd be chased out the building with a three pringed fork, they're incredibly square that lot

  • I think draconian is the word you're looking for

  • They're DRAGONS????

  • Lizards, but close.

  • that wolf and owl tattoo is so good.

  • I think that there would be a degree of consternation generated in my office if I were to turn up with a spiders web inked across my scalp, I'm not sure what would happen in terms of my continued employment, I would hope that my boss would have the cojones to stand by me, but that said I think that it would have a very significant impact on my day to day work- a lot of which is going to meetings with clients.

The meeting would no longer be about digital policy, it would be about (even if never mentioned) the chap in front of them with the tattoo.

I know a number of senior lawyers with tattoos and some more junior ones. More established people are generally more comfortable.

    Yakusa?

  • In my opinion as long as you wear a long sleeve shirt , it's fine .

You seem to have taken my posts rather personally, they weren't particularly aimed at you, I was just picking up on the point you raised about visible tattoos and employment. "Debating it" - this is a thread for discussing tattoos isn't it? I was asking genuine questions about whether tattoos really do harm employment prospects given they are so prevalent these days.

As I said, it isn't my experience, so was interested to hear what other people thought. From what's been posted it's all "I would think", "I would imagine", "I would assume". Given many of the taboos around tattoos have thankfully gone, now that so many more people have them, I wonder whether they are seen as more "acceptable" in workplaces in all sectors. I know people who work in the City and in law, since these are the two professions mentioned, who are tattooed but I agree with Clive that more senior people probably feel more confident about their positions.

You fail to mention your own notoriety within the London legal community for your body modifications...

  • And nothing was concluded that day.

    Anyway...

  • Thanks, my hair's grown back now though.

  • I have never really had any issues working for various a large architectural firms. Short sleeves are normally worn. Get some funny looks, and toung in cheek comments from time to time, but thats about it.

I have noticed recently that I'm not being sent to meetings abroad as much as I used to.... I have a feeling this may be linked to growing tattoos on my arms.
I would also never consider going to an interview without covering up my arms.

It's not really a major issue, but you'd be supprised how narrow minded a lot of people still are.
