  • As a recommendation for other artists with similar style try the following:

  • Thanks for the info - much appreciated.
I assumed that would be the case, regarding plagiarism, especially of work that is in such a recognisable style. Just wondered if there was some sort of precedent for replications. I imagine it happens quite often, where someone will come in with a photo of a tattoo they have seen, and ask for an exact copy.

  • Any self-respecting tattoo artists wouldnt do it. Thats like going up to a painter with another artists painting and asking for a copy of it, unless theyre really desperate for money theyd so no straight out.

  • It happens far too often. Most artist will say no and offer to draw something similar. Though, like you say, with artists like Yann their work it's almost trademarked (as outside of a very small movement of French artists there's basically nothing like it), as such a good artist would just say no and tell you to see the tattooist themself.

Yann's a wonderfully accomodating guy though. I just need to get off my arse and head to Canada to see the sod.

  • I'd be curious to see if the original artist would repeat the tattoo if they'd done it on someone else. If it's small or part of their flash fair enough but just copying a whole piece seems a bit sketchy to me. I'm pretty sure a lot of artists I know would want to change it somehow. Might be just me but seems a bit cheeky copying it as the person who had it tattooed may have had a lot of input on the design etc too.

On a side not the music piece above might be a little tricky depending on size and placement. Parallel straight lines can be a bit of a bastard due to lack of genuine flat surfaces on the body. I would have thought running down the forearm should be ok though.

  • I actually think Sam's musical tattoo will be fairly tricky and require a damned good artist. I would check out a lot of portfolios and really look at their linework. It would be a great looking tattoo and would be a shame to ruin it with wonky lines that don't run the same width or remain straight. Good straight lines are difficult to do and as that's essentially the tattoo, I'd find an artist who is up to snuff.

    My 2p.

  • Exactly my thoughts. Agree with Dale.

  • Know fuck all about tattoos.
Want this on the inside of my forearm (or maybe on me leg) at some point in the near future. Any recommendations of an artist who can nail this sort of thing, most appreciated

If you're based in Essex, can always pop in to look at the portfolios at Eternal Arts, Upminister. Some of them are friendly, and some of them arent, but worth a look! Have been tattooed by them before.

  • Just mocked this up in paint. Going to be getting it soon as I decide on where and have the cash.
The outlines are going to be slightly thicker and maybe a bit less detailed...

The choice of colors is a homage to my late father who was Rastafarian, his lifestyle played a massive part in my upbringing and it is something to remember him by. Also in case you didn't know I am from New Zealand. Haven't been back in exactly 10 years.

  • er really?

  • woah!

Save the money get a shitty £30 southern cross tattoo and put the rest towards a ticket back to ruatoria.

  • My first thought too, looks fecking complex to me. It needs to be right in a way that illustration type tats don't need to be. You need someone good braker.

Exactly my thoughts. Agree with Dale.

  • The outlines are definitely going to be less detailed, it's a nice idea but it could end up looking like a few coloured blobs if you're not careful. Unless you got it done mahooshive ;)

  • I'm planning my first as a memento of my alpine trip this summer......thinking of something based on the km markers...

Thinking of keeping it clean and simple...The best I've come up with so far is something like this...

Reckon it could work? I'm thinking of having it on my calf.......

  • There will surely be a more creative way of bringing the rastafarian colours together with your new zealand heritage. Why not speak to an artist and see what you can come up with? or even better find a fellow kiwi to draw something up with you. Those blocks of colour with a black outline may merge over time, and big blocks of solid colour are difficult to achieve, and could end up looking very shady (no pun intended, honest.)

Got this as a memento of my motobike adventure to portugal over the past couple of weeks. Decided to start a collection on my leg that I will add to when I feel appropriate to remind me of the good times.

Thanks for the advice. Hadn't thought of getting something else.
Will definitely put my head down for a bit and see what other ideas I can come up with.

that tends to be the aussie with the southern cross tatts, but then I agree with ya. Nationalism/flags etc is a bit rubbish. If you saw an American with a tatt or a tshirt with their country on you'd assume they were a pillock, but us in NZ seem to think it's different cos we are much smaller?

Sth cross is universal which makes it even more cringy, but your right it's more accepted because of the nature of the country.
I think more people have english tats per capita than nz etc though.
That being said i was going to get a NZ tat once but luckily friends refused to do it.
Friend got a 10cent coin tattoo the other week he has coped alot of shit for that.

Boyfriend took me this friday, was awesome! I also made sure I visited those stalls of London Tattooists you lot talk about all the time, to view their portfolios.

Also met Lucky Diamond Rich who made sure the photos I took on my shitty compact camera came out alright, and had a nice chat with my bf and his best mate outside when they went for a smoke. T'was nice.

I dont really like the colours. It's the same colours as the portuguese flag, which is my both parent's nationality, and I personally think it looks tacky on skin.

Aww, such a small tattoo :D Which part of Portugal did you go? Please say you went up north as well!
