  • I'm thinking about adding some 50's pin-up to the collection, also involving a bit of a cover up.

The last one I got was from Evil From the Needle, but with so many shops out there now, just wondering if anyone knew any good artists for a bit of pin-up.

    Cheers

  • Jose Lopez is my favourite portait artist, def one of the best in the business. Could be worth seeing if he's guest spotting anywhere soon or if he's doing the London Convention..

  • The next one I'm going to have -

  • Horiyoshi III free handing like that is pretty crazy to watch.

Meaning in other cultures tattoos are always tricky territory. I find it pretty interesting how many tattooists you get doing Japanese work. I always wonder if there's some meaning in the composition some of them might be missing. It's interesting how cultures tattoos have spread so far though nowadays.

One of my friends at work speaks Russian and was really fascinated with the Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopedia's. He had loads to say about it all because his other half's Russian and they spend a lot of time over there.

I'm pretty sure there is a whole heap of meaning in the composition, koi swimming up your arm means something different to a koi swimming down, certain things shouldn't be put togother in the same piece, figures should be facing certain ways to mean different things etc.
I'm also pretty sure most of the artists in the western world don't have a clue about any of it.

  • Here're a couple of my Tiger, and the belly that grew over the winter season! ha

  • The next one I'm going to have -

thats gonna fall out pretty quickly and end up looking liek you put your hand in some ink

yes palm tattoo's do last but on a point where there is so much contact it will just fall out. maybe not right away but it will only look good for a short time,

the center of the palm maybe, but that part, if you ride your bike as much as having a tattoo of a bike thing suggests then its not gonna be pretty.

  • thought this was a really well thought out bit of ink

  • I'm sure my mate wont mind me putting this up...

and together the jesus vs the devil sack race

  • thought this was a really well thought out bit of ink

    stunning.

  • I'd love to see a video of that actually being done, seeing how they constructed it.

  • Hey folks...

Right, I've got a question for you for which I can expect to be flamed mercilessly... Planning to get a fairly big piece on my left side ribcage, hopefully by Lionel from Out of Step and it's going to be my first piece... Thing is I've been off the bike for about a year and though I've just gotten it sorted I'm quite a bit... flabby... I don't want to book something and get it done if it's going to look fucked once I get streamlined and sexy again... Will it make a difference?

I have the same problem, put on almost 3 stone (!) since last year... Want more work doing, but yeah, IMO it does make a difference. I would say if you can, lose the weight then get tattooed. That's what I'm going to do. if you cut down the tattoo will eseentially shrink, and may end up looking out of proportion, lines not straight etc,.

Also, it's a great incentive to get training.

That was done by Nikole Lowe @ Goodtimes. That photo is on the wall in the studio. It is possibly my all time favourite tattoo.

ello. what do you mean by this? (i'm a noob to tattoos)

I was organising to get a 1/2 sleeve from her last summer, really good artist. quick worker too, but London prices are twice what I'm used to paying in Leeds...

I know money shouldn't factor when getting a tattoo, but at the time it did. Didn't end up getting the sleeve after arguing about size with Diego (i wanted 1/2, he wanted to do bigger for more detail...) so the space is still free, which i guess am quite happy about in some ways.

  • Your body sheds skin at different rates. Tattoos are essentially placed about halfway through your dermis, I believer there are something around 17 layers and a good tattoo hits halfway. Further down and it would be difficult to see (and probably open up pain/health complications), higher up it would slough off.

Places where your body replaces skin at higher rates such as the soles of your feet, palms of your hand, elbows etc will mean that the tattoo will have less to 'adhere' to and ink goes a-wandering. This isn't exactly medically or scientifically accurate but in two paragraphs that is why tattooing these areas won't really give you one for the ages. Even knuckle tattoos tend to fade and look shitty after a while.

  • oh. ok. any pics of this?

  • Anyone have any photos of coverups just purely out of interest?
I can still spot the old one beneath mine.

  • Go to BMEzine.com

They have sections for all styles and locations of tattoos, including coverups. Some great work there and some WTF work as well.

A big caveat though is to be careful where you click, particularly on piercings and 'extreme' body mods if you don't have the stomach for it. I avoid a few sections on that site as I don't.

edit: Just went there and realised it's been many months or more since I've been there and they've redesigned it. I believe you can still find specific tattoo sections and coverups but didn't have the time to check. Still, it has always had a high calibre of work and I imagine it still does.

  • I've seen some stuff on that site that has given me nightmares.
Testes swelled to the size of footballs and amputations and stuff, real crazy shit.

I love tattoos - but I admit the body mod stuff freaks me out. really.
