  • Hey now, I only explained the meaning to crumb, and didnt bash anyone did I now?

  • What's left of the sole of foot tattoo, much prefer it like this. I'm not sure if it's gonna rub off much more than that, the circle and cross are really dug in.

  • You didn't bash anyone, and I'm not knocking you. Just saying that this is the real world and while a symbol that meant peace and love and hand holding for many years in many cultures no longer means that.

People can try to reclaim it all they want but I think it's a losing battle. Millions upon millions died horrible, inhumane deaths under that symbol in the very recent past. That has given it a nasty heft you ain't gonna get rid of.

I've got my feet tattooed and the tops have stayed pretty well but the sides have faded a fair bit. I can't imagine how long the sole would stay. I'd like to get something on the sole but the older I get the more of a puss I am and dislike the pain of tattooing. I like having them, hate getting them.

  • It wasn't that painful at all, was very drunk but I still don't remember it hurting too much.
My friend got a tattoo in the arch of his foot the same night and now it's completely gone, not a spot of ink left, which is weird because I really would've thought it might've stayed on in the arch, nowhere near as rubbed as the padded parts of your feet

  • Im surpised the ink on my toes stayed the same, having done them in 2006

  • tops or bottoms?

    edit. of toes I mean

  • Tops. They usually get rubbed in trainers and shoes, I was warned about it fading fast.

    Edit...sureeee you meant toes!

  • awesome

  • Not everyone with visible swastika tattoos cares about re-educating the public.

  • A short article and slideshow about Polish criminal tattoos.
Rather than documenting them in drawings like Danzig Baldaev did with his Russian Criminal Tattoo encyclopaedias, these tattoos have been cut from the prisoners bodies and preserved in formaldehyde. There's a cycling tattoo in there as well.

  • That's how I wanna end up when I kark it

  • Give Damien Hirst a ring.

  • i used to work at kings college and they have a medical museum there with a huge number of specimens, it was awesome. they had a tattoo collection, mostly old nautical ones, one was nearly 600 years old! incredible.

  • amazing link... the polish tattoos

  • For posterity:

  • Lovely

  • Git Ludzie - equivalent of modern gangbangers, dedicated to their violent lifestyle.

I remember these tatts. When I was a nipper, I'd keep away from those guys. Every dot has it's meaning and were made against their will (mainly because they're grass or used by other cellmates as a toy) - that's why you don't mess with randomness here.

  • love that on his arm (forum member?). would love to see a proper pic. who's work is that?

When Viggo Mortensen was filming Eastern Promises, he had the people in make-up apply all the gangster tattoos each day. Apparently it took ages, so he would go on breaks from filming with all the tattoos still on. He stopped doing it when he went into a café and an old russian couple dropped their food and SPRINTED out.

  • I hear that he also got bought a lot of drinks while he had the tattoo make up on, mainly by small time crims wanting to hedge their bets.

  • Horiyoshi III free handing like that is pretty crazy to watch.

Meaning in other cultures tattoos are always tricky territory. I find it pretty interesting how many tattooists you get doing Japanese work. I always wonder if there's some meaning in the composition some of them might be missing. It's interesting how cultures tattoos have spread so far though nowadays.

One of my friends at work speaks Russian and was really fascinated with the Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopedia's. He had loads to say about it all because his other half's Russian and they spend a lot of time over there.
