  • logo is the logo though, right, if it's reinterpreted it's not the same thing surely? not the same as 'my friend is really good at drawing and they did this'

  • I definitely wouldn't want that design exactly, but am moderately competent at Illustrator, etc. But equally at a rate of one tatoo every 25 years I don't really mind spending a bit extra to get an expert to come up with something.

  • not a one-size-fits-all approach, obv, but I have historically chosen people for their style/work, and so just get them to do a thing with a brief. I want work from them, rather than the precise thing, i guess.

  • Small, simple black work based off your design sounds like the perfect time to let an apprentice get some practice and save some money.

  • If you want your art on yourself then make a design and ask someone to do it. I don't think it matters about illustrator. That logo you sent is fine to give to a tattooer.
But you'll get something much more interesting and special if you choose an artist who is motivated to use your design as something to work off. Obviously it's totally subjective and you might find your design more interesting and special than what a tattoo artist would make.

If you just want that logo then many people will be able to do that well for you.

  • I’d say also, for that design on your inside wrist you’re gonna lose a lot of the detail and edges over time – which you might be fine with but it’s worth considering and talking to the artist about it.

  • Same guy reinterpreted my very bad space invader draft idea into something much nicer. I think he's worth his salt, I'd checked his other work too before committing and knew I wasn't going to be overstretching him really.

I didn't make his insta highlights which are leagues above what I wanted.

It's a slippery slope and I have an idea for a Crosshair (Bad Batch) variant of this trooper helmet of his.

That'd be quickly upto 5 in total if I get all 3 I'm thinking of done.

  • This thread needs to go quiet, I keep wanting a new tattoo, talking myself out of it, then the chat on here gets going and I go back to drafting an email.
Current plan is for a Cowboy Dinosaur

  • Cowboy Dinosaur

    Oh yes.

  • I’d say also, for that design on your inside wrist you’re gonna lose a lot of the detail and edges over time – which you might be fine with but it’s worth considering and talking to the artist about it.

That is something I wondered about - I'm not very aware of which areas/techniques are best for this sort of thing. I presume keeping the design relatively simple helps, but it's one of the reasons I'd lean towards going for someone that'll come up with a design rather than just copy mine. How does stuff like that guy mentioned above's style work when it comes to ageing?

Though I'm also really old and it actually doesn't matter than much of course.

  • Just smash it in your skin from someone half decent then get loads more and you'll not worry about it fading in a decade or 3, bits of you that you were born with will look far worse by then.

  • This, along with ‘don’t pick it’ is pretty much all you need to know about tattoos.

  • Little update. Colour to follow probably in early August.

  • Nice!
    One sitting for that?

  • Two. lol. The lines absolutely destroyed me in the first sitting. There’s a lot of very close to my ribs action on this and it was pretty savage. Third will just be packing in colour so we felt like it was a good natural stopping point.

I didn’t use numbing cream for the lines but I did yesterday and it made a world of difference. For the first 40 mins I could literally feel nothing, then it gradually died off by about 70 mins when we finished. Was very surreal being relatively heavily tattooed and having never used numbing cream before.

  • I was gonna say, heroic sitting if it was in 1!

Look forward to seeing the finished article.

I've never used numbing cream, but also have few "painful" tattoos (funny bone was the worst but also very small, knee was pretty bad but pretty big, the rest are in soft areas so no drama)

  • I had honestly never even considered it until having had the lines done. For a really spicy area I’d recommend. No reason not to, honestly. I’ve done my time. Sounds like you’ve done yours too. Would I use it for my leg or something? No prob not. But elsewhere on the front of my torso? Sure.

  • if i ever get my other knee done, i would certainly consider it / discuss it with the artist.
I had to tap out after 3 hours last time, lining and most of the shading was done, but the swelling and discomfort was too much for wimpy me.

  • any recommendations for artists in Edinburgh? Looking for “bold” black work or or “bold” or otherwise “interesting” use of colour.(or ignorant style). Ideally artists that have a “uniqueness” to their work.

can I explain what I mean? nope. do I ever know what I mean? sort of, maybe not.

  • Without a doubt one of the people at Insider. Maybe take a look at Marley Ford or Jack Peppiette.

  • absolutely insane line up of artists at inside. thanks!

  • Great! Nice job

  • So I went with the design it myself and get it done at that place in Peckham option. Thanks for everyone that gave advice.
It is really hard to take a photo of a circular tattoo that actually looks circular, but it is in real life.

Predictably I now want more and this time happy to let someone design something for me - can anyone recommend someone London based that could do an insect tattoo nicely? Probably in black or black and grey, ideally using some photos of baby praying mantises I took as reference.
