I am far from being an arbiter of tattoo taste, I have a chinese design taken from a box left to me by my aunt on my right shoulder , it is my only tattoo and 15 years on I still love it. My only advice would be to make sure it is 100% what you want adorning your skin for life. Many of the current styles will be like carbon dating yourself in the same way as the now unfashionable tribal style has become dated.

Find an artist you like and hit them up, discuss ideas, they can draw it up a few times, then once you’re happy with it just go for it. You’ll be thinking about it forever otherwise. Some of my favourite tattoos are the ones I thought about the least.

I think that's the issue (you're bang on). Wanting to ensure I get something solely for me which is meaningful (again to me and mine) and not following fashion/trend has got me thinking waaaay too much and with too much caution. I'll follow your advice!
