  • Im dredging up an *old old *thread cause i would like some advice.

As some of you are aware, im a forrin, so i am unfamiliar with the dental ways in this country.

I think im developing a tooth ache and i want to catch it before it becomes serious. I havent been to a dentist in a few years (last time was a fortune from a private clinic in SW London). I am now Central/ East and looking for a good dentist.

And away, whats the ins/outs of NHS and private? I heard rumours that its near on impossible to go to an NHS dentist these days. Is that correct?
    What is considered expensive?

  • my lady just went here:
    http://www.stockwelldentalpractice.co.uk/

i know that's not central but...

she got her nashers looked and filled by the ol'NHS.

if you wants nice pretty white fillings then you has to pay more monies.

  • NHS is easy, theres two in Clapham I could have got into when I joined. I went with Dental Arts Studio and they have been fine. Takes about 3 weeks to get in unless it's an emergency.

Consults are not too expensive but the fillings will cost £100 or so if you want white ones as they are not covered. I think you can still get the silver fillings cheap on the NHS.

  • Oh yeah, toothache...htfu.

    String---------door---------slam

  • My major ball ache with the NHS system is that when you want private stuff done (white fillings or a veneer crown) they are quite often quoting higher rates than some of the private clinics.

Still haven't cracked this system yet either...

NHS and private, white fillings from £45 and porcelain crowns from £350 sounds ok...

Alternatively, book a flight to SA and get it done for half the price!

Well that link fully explains the "ins and outs of NHS"

To be honest i'm only replying to you in the manner that you reply to most newbs on this forum…

  • hahahaha!

Fair do's! (actually, im quite nice to noobs... But i see what you saying)

  • You can easily see an NHS Dentist in London- I should know as I manage dental contracts for the NHS.

Try NHS choices for the nearest one or PM me for advice

BTW - you can't get White fillings on the NHS as they are cosmetic and don't last as well as amalgam,

  • Yes, one of my former contractors

which is what we call progress.

  • I found dentists here to be fairly affordable compared to what I have paid in Oz.
Obviously depends on what you need doing,

  • I've avoided any future dental problems by getting one large spherical tooth installed. Works a treat.

  • Thats a horse foot in mouth...

  • Go to Poland. The money you save compared to London dentists will pay for the trip.

  • That depends on how much you need done though- I went to the Dentist almost every Monday morning for about three months to get my smashed teeth sorted out, that would have been a long holiday.

Also, for the more complicated operations the quality of the aftercare is very important- I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with Polish aftercare, but it's a long way to go if your crown comes loose.

  • You got lucky on the NHS though. Not everyone would even qualify for treatment - I wonder what the waiting list time is like is for just boring stuff?

My missus is a dentist here, shes pretty good and they are pretty cheap on private stuff in comparison with everything else around there...

Also she will take on NHS if thats what you are after...

give me a shout and i will pass on her details that way i can tell her to book you in through NHS if she has availablity..

No- I paid for all the work that I had at the Dentists, the implants were funded.

The dentist accepted me as an NHS patient, so the prices were capped according to the NHS menu of charges.

No waiting- make the appointments and go to them, pay the bill, go to the next one.

  • That's how it works in Poland, just cheaper.
We landed and drove straight to the dentist, got a couple of fillings and headed to Mal's pub.
Obviously the amount of work we needed wasn't anything like yours but I'd still see flying over for hardcore work as a valid option.

  • For simple stuff I'd say it is a great option, and even for complex stuff- just be aware that you might need to fly back for fettling when working out the pricing of the Polski vs. UK Dentists.

One of my implants started to back out- literally unscrewing itself from the titanium insert in my jaw.

I went back to Guys and they removed the implant and reseated it- and it's been fine since.

I was absolutely shitting myself about it thinking that the insert had failed and that they'd need to re-drill the bone for a new one!
