  • Surely Hackney is a violent enough place you can get your teeth knocked out for free?

  • I know a good one in Leyton:

    J E Dineen
229 High Road Leyton, Leyton, London, E10 5QE
    Telephone: 020 8558 6036, Fax: 020 8539 3505

There used to be a Palestinian doctor (Yasser?) - a very good one, who worked at the address above a couple of days a week (NHS) and the rest privately on Harley St.

It's not Canning Town. In Hackney you can get incision only, but no extraction.

  • I was thinking of going private because it was an NHS one that fooked my tooth up, his apology included "Well it's only NHS"

  • Seriously - Ryanair return ticket and a price of the NHS treatment, but done privately:

  • Sorry for the hijack but does anyone have any strategies for dealing with serious anxiety about dental work?

Having a wisdom tooth out today at a new private dentist after the NHS one I visited would not have it that the lignacaine anaesthetic was not working until I leapt out of the chair when the drill hit the nerve. This was not the first time this has happened and I now have serious problems getting myself to the dentist, I've been putting it off for 8 weeks but now the cocodemol isn't working and I have to get it done.

They've said they'll try a bunch of anaesthetics and give me laughing gas but I still really don't fancy it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's anxious about dental work so what does anyone else do?

And yes I will HTFU etc...

that makes us two. I fucking hate the dentist. Don't mind the pain as much, it's just that feeling of a drill and no control. Hate it.

8 weeks you say. I went 7 years ago, the last thing he said was next time you're back will take a look at those wisdom teeth, haven't been back since

Saying that, my girlfriend just went back in sweden and they had a laser instead of a drill, she said it was great. I might actually give that a go, sounds a lot less awful

  • @AliW if you're still looking at this thread:

I can heartily recommend St John's Way clinic, by the Archway gyratory. My dentist there is close to retirement (Mr Willis) so may not be taking new patients, but the other dentists and the hygenist there are really good too, been going for years. Willis will only recommend doing work if you insist on it, he takes a pretty conservative approach to intervention.

Not exactly Hackney, but not a big deal to ride up there, and there's big traffic railings to lock a bike to right outside.

    Get your wallet ready though.

I'd been 2 years ago when I had a bout of toothache, she gave me a filling (the second time I'd felt the whole drilling process un-numbed ) then said I'd have to return to get the wisdom tooth sorted. The pain had gone so there was no way I was going back. It has now raised its ugly head in a big way, it tends to start giving me grief about midnight and I end up having to get out of bed to take the dog for a full speed march until the codeine kicks in. Fun.

  • that sounds like when I eventually have to get my ass there too, when some form of pains forces me to it

  • I had a lot of work done at City Smile on Hackney Rd (that bit's technically Tower Hamlets) and they were very good.
    They take NHS patients too.

  • drrrrrredge.

how does the whole nhs/private thing work? i haven't been to a dentist in probably 10 years (powerful need to avoid having undergone years of childhood orthrodondics). but on saturday night i managed to chip one of my front teeth. it's sharp and keeps catching my lip so i need something done soonish. not keen to pay if i can help it but i don't inderstand how the system works. was going to just rock up here and see what they say.

it's only a little chip so presumably all i need is a bit of a file. so how does it work? can i just request "the free option please"?

Not very helpful, but the best advice is get a good dentist. Once you've been to someone decent the fear fades quickly. My girlfriend's dad does my teeth and after the initial shock of being whisked to the surgery on the Sunday, the first weekend that I met them, I no longer really fear dental work at all; he's just really good, methodical and calming. He's like a craftsman.

I don't think you can generalise about German dental care standards, though. The old 'look how good the German health system is' adage we heard endlessly under the Tory government in the 80s (endless jibes about the NHS etc) is utter bollocks. I went to a doctor about an ingrowing, infected toenail, and she gave me an ointment based on tar. I then went to a podiatrist, who gave me a mixture of antitbiotics aluminium and witchcraft. I moved back to the UK, the doctor took one look, put me on antibiotics and arranged for me to get the damn thing operated on, which is exactly what needed to be done in the first place.

  • while we're on the subject - anyone know a competent dentist somewhere around swiss cottage/kentish town/gospel oak?

  • I have just been to the dentist (first time in over 8 years) for toothache. Got to have 2 teeth out and 3 fillings. The dentist is an old guy based at Church St/Stokey High St junction. I am absolutely crapping it for the extractions and fillings later this week.

  • Bump!

Unhappy with my current dentist who did a shoddy job on a root canal treatment some time ago and was trying to overcharge me heavily for a crown. Said tooth is playing up again and I reckon I'm up for the same treatment this time again.

Any recommendations for an affordable dentist (ideally somewhere between W10 and W1) that takes NHS patients (for the root canal treatment) and charges reasonable price for crowns (non NHS).

  • sorry to invade your thread, but i didn't think it was worth of a new one,

but does anyone know a good dentist in herne hill/brixton or somewhere nearish.

There seem to be about 700 dentists in the area but they all look like they smash your teeth out with rocks. - i just want a non teeth smashing dentist, please.

  • going to the dentist for the first time in 7 years on friday... do not want to

  • i'm in the same boat, at least 7 years.

but last night a found a new whole. booooooooo

  • Broke a tooth a few days ago and finally saw the dentist today. She was really nice and friendly and whatever she did thankfully didn't hurt. However I have to have a root canal. She referred me to a place in Islington but it's private and I can't really afford £300-400 with my impending redundancy.

Does anyone know how you find a NHS dentist who'll do the Root Canal? Is it a case of just ringing around?

  • All nhs should cover root canal - its either band 2 or 3 at most places.

Though this knowledge is only from me ringing around last week.

Best of luck man, i have my appointment on thursday. Arrrgh

  • PM me

I manage the NHS Dental Contracts some where else in London and am a relatively big cheese - I can advise you what you can do

  • PM me

So you can get to the root of the problem?

  • Im dredging up an *old old *thread cause i would like some advice.

As some of you are aware, im a forrin, so i am unfamiliar with the dental ways in this country.

I think im developing a tooth ache and i want to catch it before it becomes serious. I havent been to a dentist in a few years (last time was a fortune from a private clinic in SW London). I am now Central/ East and looking for a good dentist.

And away, whats the ins/outs of NHS and private? I heard rumours that its near on impossible to go to an NHS dentist these days. Is that correct?
    What is considered expensive?

  • NHS is near impossible to find and dentist are expensive.

    I hope this helps.
