  • So by Uk law this sign means I can drive at ANY speed, just not 20?

Anyway, I learned some of the highway code today. Still don't agree but I guess must comply. Not feeling overly anarchistic today.

  • I would imagine the thinking is that a think red line through the symbol might make the symbol itself harder to read (especially when moving - when they were developing the road signage systems they tested the readability of them by attaching them to the top of vehicles and driving them past a group of stationary "drivers" at various speeds).

we're on a bicycle, we're not going at a breaknecking speed to not tell what's the symbol behind the red line.

  • we're on a bicycle, we're not going at a breaknecking speed to not tell what's the symbol behind the red line.

Yes, but some people have poorer eyesight, are hard of thinking, etc. etc. Same reasoning as website accessibility - you might be able to read that small, light grey type on your well-calibrated LCD monitor but to a visually impaired pensioner on an old, small, fuzzy CRT screen it might be invisible. It ought to work for the largest possible percentile.

  • Any road sign that is circular with a red outline generally means "no ------" in the UK.

E.g. the "no motor vehicles" / low flying motorcycles one:

Anyone who has studied for a driving test should know that, but of course a significant number of cyclists never have.

    Dumbest signage ever.

    What does this mean ^

No 40 year olds? You can do any speed you want except 40mph? See? Fucking stupid signs.

^ Why do they cross these ones out?

  • I see others already commented on the stupidity behind these signs.

    Proper signs ^

  • = Cycling Allowed.

Seriously though, what a dumb fucking concept for signage.

When I was in Paris I went through a number of tunnels thinking this sign meant "cyclists please use". Kept wondering why the cars were honking at me.

  • FWIW, I think the UK has generally very well designed road signage, barring the odd aberration created by local council numpties. The not-crossing-out thing makes sense once you know the rationale - which should take about 30 seconds of reading the highway code - but it does catch a lot of people out.

[doctornick] Inflammable means flammable? What a crazy language! [/doctornick]

  • You may have seen this further up in the thread:

    http://www.lfgss.com/post1581134.html

  • So actually there are two separate signs informing you that cycles are prohibited - the "local buses only" one and the "no cycles" one.

The positioning of them is a bit poor though, especially the lack of any space between the "Only" instruction and the prohibitive signs underneath.

  • Corner of Regents Park this morning, watch out!

I had fun this morning. Down the side of regents park. Loads of pigs on bikes by the gate randomly stopping cyclists. I dont know why, they didnt stop me. So, to be helpfull I jumped the red light onto Marellabone Road also throughing in an illigal right turn (I do this every day after the cars from the right stop before the other lights change). I heard a wistle and a shout from behind me, a quick and descreat look over my sholder shows that one has decided to give chase. So, I wait at the next light where he nearly caches up still shouting (I dont look back) lights change and I ride calmly off, this happens twice by wich time the shouts are interspersed with swearing and huffing and puffing. I put him out of his missery and ride off up the road. When I looked back he was miles back and looked like he was stopping.
I probably shouldnt go that way tomorrow.....

All a bit Dancing James really. (sorry James)

The Marylebone road is really bad, especially if you're trying to turn right into regent's park and you're travelling east-west.

  • Is that what it suppose to mean?! blimey, I didn't know that.

    did a quick google search, turn out it does mean no cycling allowed;

    http://lbbd.cyclemaps.org.uk/signs/

fuck that, I'll carry on riding down that road anyway, especially when the sign look like you're allowed to.

You have some homework to do Ed.

  • The Marylebone road is really bad, especially if you're trying to turn right into regent's park and you're travelling east-west.

Not really, the traffic from the right stops first giving enough time to cut right. There is a pedestrian crossing so I avoid then peds (or stop if it is busy) but it is fine. It is safer than doing the loop round the cresent where I have been cut up so many time from cars coming the other way. After that you only have to wait at one light as the phazing of the lights is for about a 20mph average along the road so it is pretty free flowing.

  • Sorry to hear about your experience Somebody.. You are a hero, and RoadPeace is a great charity.

  • Got told off by police going west on Clerkenwell rd where Roseberry Ave converges with it for stopping just in front of the ASL.

OK, so fair enough – I'm not supposed to stop ahead of the ASL, but really as long as I can see the light itself surely it's not a big deal? Not to mention the fact that 8 times out of 10 there are cars / motorbikes in the ASL anyway...

So the policeman pulled up next to me and this other bloke and did the usual "You see that? That green box? That's for you. You complain about not having cycle lanes then don't use what's given to you" etc. The thing that pissed me off was that they had been waiting round the corner on leather lane - presumably looking to ambush some fixie skidder coming up the silk route jumping reds (as most of them do at that junction). After listening in silence to this bloke go on about ASLs, his partner slides up behind and says "see, that wasn't so hard was it?" - assuming that I had planned on jumping the red until I noticed there was police.

So thanks goes out to all you hip skiddy skiddy cyclists for jumping every red possible, I LOVE being incorrectly stereotyped by police.

  • did the usual "You see that? That green box? That's for you. You complain about not having cycle lanes then don't use what's given to you" etc.
there's so much wrong with that argument it's hard to know where to begin.

  • I've never complained about not having cycle lanes in my life.

  • there's so much wrong with that argument it's hard to know where to begin.

    +1

but then, most coppers don't turn to coppering after getting bored by their chair in analytic topology, do they.

  • You have some homework to do Ed.

just waiting for my package to arrived.

    Hah!

  • Maybe this is less open for interpretation

Maybe should email to Boris, especially considering the amount of B Bikes rolling through there this morning??

  • TSRGD defines what the spacing should be - If it is wrong, the signs are unlawful, and no offence is committed.

Yeah, I should point out I don't know what the regulations specify - it might be perfectly legal - I just meant that to my eye it's confusing not to have any space underneath the "Only" part of the sign, because it relates only to the sign above it.

  • Popo on cycles at 08.30 this morning, by Newington Butts coming up to Elephant & Castle roundabout, three cyclists stopped (one of which was given a ticket).

They also seem to be stopping vehicles which is a nice turn.

  • Still at E&C at 9.10 stopping bikes and Cars. That's a roundabout to be ultra aware on normally what with roadworks and "would you pull over please" as well, got out of Dodge pretty sharpish this morning.

  • What are the bikes being pulled over for at E&C?
