  • why women are more willing than men to take this step, to ask for help and to approach cycling safely in London through this route. I don't believe it is because they are more intimidated. I think the experiences are the same but the responses are different.

I think males, specifically those of the younger variety, have somewhat a level of 'street cred' to maintain. That and the typical male pride thing.

    I'm only stereotyping.

  • Blokes asking for help?

    Sure.

    Yeah, this.

We were talking about cycle training, not why you chose to become a courier.

  • speaking of which, I saw a courier today who looked about 15. He was cool.

  • That would be Max's older brother.

  • has max been cycle trained?

  • Has James been potty trained?

  • Get lost, Will.

  • yep trained in the art of potty mouth

come here and let me shit in yours

  • i went to the lorry driver / cyclist awareness event.

    my thoughts are:

    1. the blind spot is not very big at all.

    2. the lorry driver has so many mirrors that it must be very difficult processing all that information into a meaningful / safe decision. i counted five mirrors all pointing in different directions. with the front window and two side windows that means the driver is trying to process and make sense of eight images all at once. it seems a lot to me.

    3. i remain of the view that these lorries and so many mpv's in a built up area are dangerous.

    4. as i said to the police at the event the result is to stay safe so i will keep moving if the coast is clear and if that means doing an rlj then so be it.

    5. the seargeant in charge of the event was rude to me / is a bully.

    6. they stamped my ticket so i do not have to pay the fine of £30 so i will make a donation of £30 to the road peace charity.

    7. i will continue to use my local environment in a responsible, safe and sustainable way - by cycling not driving.

^ sorry if this all seems a bit formal. but it is a serious issue. people are getting killed out there and it is my belief that those with responsibility for it are not concentrating hard / acting quickly enough.

ps i did say my peice to the seargant in charge re the bigger picture on road safety. he laughed in a forced kind of way. i thought he was a rather patronising man.

    anyway enough.

  • on a lighter note.

done about 70k on the bikes today. lovely weather. bikes going well. i have my health. and i love life.

    see you all soon.

    1. as i said to the police at the event the result is to stay safe so i will keep moving if the coast is clear and if that means doing an rlj then so be it.

...or take cycle training if you really think it's actually safer to RLJ (like waiting behind an HGV while at the traffic light instead of trying to get in the front of it).

  • Cycling in a bus lane is not allowed...

Well the lane that between theobald rd and bloomsbury way. I had NO idea that the little sign below the 20mph sign meant no cycing. This one:

Now thats total ignorance on my behalf, but I do think that is a totally counter intuitive sign communication.

Here's how I expect a NO sign to look:

So anyway, there was a cop pulling everyone over and giving us warnings. At least he explained the law. And to be fair I see loads of people trying to squish up the inside of the buses rather than wait behind so It's probably a good thing.

  • Such bullshit! Oh my god guys watch out!

In 40k yesterday I saw eight police cars and two, count them, two had pulled over cars and were talking to the drivers. The others were sirens ablaze, clearly not after your 12mph nodder.

OMG the injustice of being targeted as a cyclist in this way is horrible. I think we should protest against cars in ASLs.

  • Corner of Regents Park this morning, watch out!

I had fun this morning. Down the side of regents park. Loads of pigs on bikes by the gate randomly stopping cyclists. I dont know why, they didnt stop me. So, to be helpfull I jumped the red light onto Marellabone Road also throughing in an illigal right turn (I do this every day after the cars from the right stop before the other lights change). I heard a wistle and a shout from behind me, a quick and descreat look over my sholder shows that one has decided to give chase. So, I wait at the next light where he nearly caches up still shouting (I dont look back) lights change and I ride calmly off, this happens twice by wich time the shouts are interspersed with swearing and huffing and puffing. I put him out of his missery and ride off up the road. When I looked back he was miles back and looked like he was stopping.
I probably shouldnt go that way tomorrow.....

All a bit Dancing James really. (sorry James)

  • You fought the law and you won? He'd have been so angry right now if he'd have caught you. Angggggggger. Argggggggggggh.

(I bet he contemplated getting the chopper but then thought of being baited back at the yard)

ftfw. I love that. This will be on my new commute from next Tuesday, I hope I get the same treatment to alleviate the boredom :)

  • i have my health. and i love life.

The most important thing in life bar none :)

  • = Cycling Allowed.

Seriously though, what a dumb fucking concept for signage.

  • Is that what it suppose to mean?! blimey, I didn't know that.

    did a quick google search, turn out it does mean no cycling allowed;

    http://lbbd.cyclemaps.org.uk/signs/

fuck that, I'll carry on riding down that road anyway, especially when the sign look like you're allowed to.

Cheers, had not seen that. did a quick search for Bus lane and Holborn... didn't find it.

But yeah, silly signage, silly rule.

    What's this mean?

  • Any road sign that is circular with a red outline generally means "no ------" in the UK.

E.g. the "no motor vehicles" / low flying motorcycles one:

Anyone who has studied for a driving test should know that, but of course a significant number of cyclists never have.

    http://www.driving-test-success.com/uk-road-signs03.htm

  • ^^ I always kinda wondered what than one meant. Stunning. Why do they have a diagonal slash through some signs eg "No right turn" but not others? Ugh.. these are questions with no answers.

  • I would imagine the thinking is that a think red line through the symbol might make the symbol itself harder to read (especially when moving - when they were developing the road signage systems they tested the readability of them by attaching them to the top of vehicles and driving them past a group of stationary "drivers" at various speeds).

With the arrow-based ones, though, I think the line is added to make clearer the distinction between, e.g., a prohibited turn and a triangular "bend in the road" warning sign:

    vs.
