  • there is one case on here where someone collared a guy riding his stolen bike and he recovered it.
He just saw him riding it about town. Amazing really but more often than not, the situation is that you probably won't find it again. :(

  • it's always fucking forums with polices, bike stolen? fill in a forum, mobile stolen? forum, gang raped by redneck? forum, tube stations and church been blown up nearby? forum, someone invaded iraq? fill in a fucking forums.

  • pedaling home from my nightshift this morning I saw a similiar bike travelling the other direction had mudguards though and looked little old but you're right. I really wasn't in the mood or have enough energy to confront the guy;I'll wait at the same spot tomorrow and have a polite chat with him; if he is a genuine single speed commuter!!!"Excuse me sir can I check your frame number............"had enough of the English weather and people that's for sure.Rgds Harris

    indeed.

btw - richmond is an affluent area, but also has several of the lowest-performing secondary schools in the country. it's not a safe place to a lock a bike, it's an attractive place to go and steal things from those that have much more than you, living in abject luxury only just around the corner.

*edit: i can see how you misinterpreted this - but it wasn't aimed at 'you' - apologies. i wouldn't make that kind of assumption.

the 'you' in question refers to the disenfranchised secondary school students who live cheek by jowl with the rich.

  • ...had enough of the English weather and people that's for sure.

Oh quite. We're a bally awful lot, frightful bores to boot. What.

    ... abject luxury ...

Phrase of the day, pj FTW

    whoop!

  • Ftw?

sorry was that a bit unclear? You should win 'Phrase of the Day' if indeed there was such a title.

  • whoop!

    Err, whoops.

even a simple "nice bike! where did you get it from?" would shake him up, someone here did that, which cause the theft to drop the bike and run the fuck away.

  • Ftw?

    FTW = "For The Win."
An enthusiastic emphasis to the end of a comment, message, or post. Sometimes genuine, but often sarcastic.
Originated from the game show Hollywood Squares where the result of the player's response is expected to win the game.

  • In this case, ginuwine. If a little pointless.

  • Let's be completely honest here - the police are only there to issue you with a crime number so that you can claim on your insurance. We'd be kidding ourselves if we thought they'd do anything more.

I had a letter through from my local nick three days after my MTB was taken saying that due to the lack of evidence they would be closing the case - in spite of them leaving a (possibly stolen) portable stereo at the scene, as well as there being the possibility of fingerprints on my Mercian, which they abandoned just down the road.

At the end of the day it's "just a bike" (their words, not mine) - they don't prize them as highly as us, even though the buying and selling of said bikes probably [RANT:daily mail/]fuels the trade in hard drugs and prostitution[RANT:daily mail/] and catching said thieves would have a knock on effect on overall crime levels. They don't even come out for car break ins now - so it's not just bikes.

  • when i had one of my icehockey sticks stolen from my room at Uni.... two policemen came round, just cos they had never had a called for stolen icehockey sticks before.

fat lot of use it was, and insurance wouldnt pay out cos i didnt have a reciept for a 2 year old stick, and they didnt believe it was worth £200.. bastards.

the police have more important things to do, like enforcing, like harrasing black kids and eating donuts

  • Let me get something clear;just because I parked my new bike in Richmond doesn't mean I am affluent or privelaged.I am a normal hard working guy fallen victim to petty crime which just pisses me off with this country. It would be an interesting social experiment to place locked bikes in cities around the world and monitor how long it took for them to disappear........."Edscoble" left his in Kings Cross for 3 days and it was totally intact on his return....Richmond or Kings Cross??
By the way Edscoble spoke to my insurance company just now the no "forums" or "forms" needed just a fax........think it might be a Spanish Bank!!!Gonna take a £400 hit for the privelage too......but cause I live near Richmond obviously its not a problem.

  • im from Esher, and havnt had a problem with my parents insurance company paying out for two stolen BMXs (one in Esher, one in Kingston) it was a few years ago tho.

heck, Esher makes Richmond look somewhat pikie, so where you live means nothing

  • Apologies my reference to "people" was meant to refer to the scum of the streets who have to steal from normal people.
    I am English.

edit:: i see how and why you misinterpreted what i posted before - apologies.

it wasn't aimed at you at all, i shouldn't have used the second person there. if you re-read it there's too much ambiguity.

    here - see?

  • "Edscoble" left his in Kings Cross for 3 days and it was totally intact on his return....Richmond or Kings Cross??

it was more to do with how I lock the bike than the area, I was just surprised it's still there, a small price to pay for choosing the right lock and locking it right.

So my 'special delivery' worked then ?

  • Hi ASM
It was locked with an all in one cable lock;frame and both wheels secured to iron railings. If I was using my courier bag I would have had 2 cables and locks but cycling light on Sat.........

So i'm going to assume you mean something like this?

  • No;had lock system built in.
    This post mortem is painful.

  • Like this?

  • those are shit, even if you paid a lots of money for them, it's a really bad idea to invested in a simple lock for an expensive bike.
