• murtle, you're not down with the kids anymore.. face it.

  • never have been. :(

  • I have been eyeing these up for a while:

I don't have spd's but was thinking if I go the route of something more cycling specific then it is able to do both should I make the transistion to clipless.

Does anyone have any experience with these?

I would at a push go for those Nikes above but I really like avoiding that brand as much as possible.

  • i do, indeedee,

31t®um, I get it now, it is Murtle backwards. just didn't see it...

Are you happy with the Vittoria 1976? or would you rather have the ones you have just posted above? And the forum probably needs to know which colour you chose.

  • Ok, dead-ish threah but essentially the only thing keeping me from considering SPDs is my documented medical need to wear Converse 90% of my waking hours.

    Anyone done this?

    Feasable?

  • MA3K has done a thread on converting trainers / skate shoes to clipless.

    An overview

You need a pair of old cycling shoes.

cut off the uppers and the tread leaving you with the stiff sole with the hole for the cleat.

    Remove insole of trainers

    cut hole for cleat

    place stiff sole inside,

    glue (epoxy I think).

  • I was tempted to do this with a pair of brogues for the tweed ride, but ran out of time.

  • go for northwaves man, they lastages and are hardwearing, I got the sharks and they are fantastic, at the other end of scale my winter boots are on third winter,
and what you need the street type shoes are the middle way, bit like Buddhism
    Italian shoes ftw innit

  • go for northwaves man, they lastages and are hardwearing, I got the sharks and they are fantastic, at the other end of scale my winter boots are on third winter..

Agreed, Northwaves are exceptionally good quality, long-lasting.
All 3 of my 'normal' cycling shoes are NW, the winter boots are ace.

  • I really like the Spesh S-Works shoes, I have both road and MTB versions.

  • Another +1 for Northwave, I have the full Spring/Summer/Winter collection.

  • My Lakes (MX155) are great to walk in, but a bit gimpy-looking. The Mavic (formerly Adidas) range are pretty standard-trainer looking, last a good year and don't cost stupid money.

  • Yesterday I got the Cyclones linked in before in the thread, they are currently selling quite cheap at ChainReaction. It's my first clipless experience, and I'm pairing them with Alium ATACs.

I quite like them, they're a bit oversized — like they're a bit inflated — for that style of trainer but otherwise as plain as it gets. I have the black ones (er, obviously?) and plan to paint the white branding in black also.

When I need to replace them I don't know what I'm going to do, Adidas seemed to make the most stylish SPDs but they're not producing anymore?

The problem I see with DIY is that in order to walk without sounding like a tap dancer you'd need a pretty thick sole... but sure I will experiment with that.

  • ^ Mavic '09 are just rebranded adidas shoes

    adidas Minrett vs Mavic Cruize

  • Sartorial elegance?

  • Sartorial elegance?

That would win if it was a recessed spd/time arrangement.

oh, thanks. now I understand why those were somewhat appealing to me. maybe I shall try them on a LBS... they're pretty expensive. the Mavic tax maybe? plus, they made them less street and more MTB :(

I searched a lot (online) for the Minrett because I prefer them to the Cyclones, but I could'nt find them anywere in my size.

  • I <3 BSNYC.

personally i don't try to combine SPDs and casual. It never works and you just start looking like one of those dudes that wears camping gear around the city and always has a sense of where north is...

ha yeah - exactly "technical fabrics are great for the tube". Big lol.

  • ^^^those look 'special'. Not in a good way.

:) I am buying a pair of those.

I need a new pair of BMX shoes and a new pair of SPD shoes and these solve both problems with one pair of shoes.

  • Oh wait, I can't. Not out in UK until Christmas....

  • I have a pair of these, 661 Filter SPD's. Got them about 2 weeks a go. They have a little window you remove under the ball of your foot for the cleat attachment. Sole is solid as. Can walk around pretty easy but you wouldn't want to run a marathon in 'em. Am as yet to try out with spd pedals as i only have clips and straps at the moment, but the power transfer is awesome over ordinary shoes. They are very well ventilated, but trade off is they are not waterproof.

If you get a pair order 1/2 to 1 euro size above your normal size. The fit is tight. Even with doing this when i first got them I nearly sent them back as my toes were still squeezed a bit, but given they have a leather upper it does give & stretch and now they fit great.
