• I'm a wiseguy.

Are you talking to me? Did I tell you to talk to me? Do you think I want you talkin' to me? Do I look like I is in the mood for listening to you? So, are you talkin' to me?

You what? I was talking to the INTERNET!

  • One nice thing was that a number of suits came up to me after the incident to check I was alright and to say they were on my side. so perhaps they're not all cunts after all.

That's cause round there it's wall to wall lawyers!

  • Well it works for me, and I've never been doored, despite the fact that plenty of people have opened their doors on me such that I would have gone right into them had I been riding too fast and/or in the 'door zone'. I'm not saying that it's the OP's fault, because it clearly isn't, but I'm sure he will learn to anticipate and avoid these things in future.

Oh I see.... I'm obviously a shit rider.

Messenjah, I sincerely hope your luck doesn't change any time soon.

  • heal well buddy boy. hopefully the injuries arent bad enough to keep you away tuesdays. if they are come anyway and ill buy you a beer to ice your hand with. and you can always dj.

  • Oh I see.... I'm obviously a shit rider.

Messenjah, I sincerely hope your luck doesn't change any time soon.

I never said you were a shit rider for fuck's sake, I never even implied that.

But if you want to take it like that then feel free to. Keep on being a 'shit rider' and keep getting doored.

  • You can't fucking win with cabbies.

Someone sticks their hand out for a fare and they'll swerve across lanes into the cycle lane stopping real sharp to pick up- no indicators.

They don't put on the hazard lights when letting folk out.

You think sod it I'll ride down the middle and they pull-off the most outrageous u-turns with no warning.

Take good care of yourselves people. And keep that d-lock close at hand

  • Even without a cycle lane undertaking on a bike is legal, the highway code mentions bikes and motor bikes filtering traffic I beleive, says something about taking due care and paying attentionn while doing it, but if the cabbie wasn't signalling it's his fault. (note, most cabs have to press a button to let sitengers out so it is the drivers fault not sitenger)

You should have taken his nunmber and complained to the licensing authority.

Although Personnally i try to over take on the right where possible...

I've got to say if one did actually hit me though I certainly would take the law into my own hands and beat the cabbie to death with my lock... er, I mean would not obviously... ahem..

  • I never said you were a shit rider for fuck's sake, I never even implied that.

But if you want to take it like that then feel free to. Keep on being a 'shit rider' and keep getting doored.

Oh come on... yes you did... well you implied that I allowed myself to be doored by not being vigilant enough or something like that.

I'm just getting touchy because there are times when it doesn't matter how fucking wary you are, you just have not chance to escape. You obviously have been living a very charmed life... and boy do I wish I was you.

The fact is unless I crawl to work and back at 5 mph and turn a 30 minute commute into a hour and a half commute then this sort of shit is going to happen...

...UNLESS PEOPLE THINK BEFORE OPENING A CAR DOOR HALF WAY ROUND HAMMERSMITH ROUND-A-BOUT!

  • Oh come on... yes you did... well you implied that I allowed myself to be doored by not being vigilant enough or something like that.

    Yes, of course I did...

I'm not saying that it's the OP's fault, because it clearly isn't

    ...clearly.

  • Yes, of course I did...

    ...clearly.

    You're funny.... remember this bit

"but I'm sure he will learn to anticipate and avoid these things in future."

Where's Harry hill when you need him?

You're just seem to be going about this in the old "Not being rude or anything, but your're a cunt" kind of way.

  • I've just realized I'm getting dragged off topic....

Cyclists are at risk from knobs who open car doors with out looking, baring complete speed freaks, (and the Bristleator is not one of them), and are pretty much at the mercy of such unthinking pricks.

Right I'm off to the pub.

    MADS

    You're clearly missing my point.

If you pulled your head out of your arse then you'd realise that what I meant was that with experience you learn to expect the unexpected.

So now that's cleared up, I'm off to the pub, taraa.

  • sorry to hear this bristles, glad you're okay.. hopefully see you tuesday buddy

  • There's always the unexpected.

No!... I understand your point perfectly... I just happen to think you are wrong.

    No need to get nasty.

  • Similar thing happened to me today.

I was riding on Squirries Street heading north towards Gosset Street, left side of me were full of parked cars and then the cycle road where I was on at that moment.

Suddenly the car door opened right in front of me I crashed, rolled and fell down quite hard middle of the road.

The driver was keep saying sorry and he didn't realize I was coming towards as he was grabbing his bag while opening the door.

Thankfully there were several people passing by and they were being very helpful staying till the ambulance come etc...

I didn't call the police since the driver was admitting and keep saying it was his fault and stayed at the emergency room with me till I get my xrays done and drove me back to my flat.

Well I think I'm ok at the moment except soar muscles and several bruises nothing serious just minor injuries.

Another thing I'm concerned is of course my bicycle. Untrue front wheel and handlebar is fixable so I don't really mind, but now it has quite big dent on the down tube I don't know what to do.

Should I ask him to pay for my frame? I told him to meet me at the bike shop tomorrow to get checked. I have never been in these kind of situation so I'm posting here to hear some advice.

  • A swift interwebulator search finds:

Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986
Regulation 105: "No person shall open, or cause or permit to be opened, any door of a
vehicle on a road so as to injure or endanger any person."

I'd say you've handled it about right. Meet at the bike shop, and ask him to pay for the frame if it's determined that the frame isn't safe (my instinct is that "quite a big dent in the downtube" is likely to mean that it isn't, at least in the medium/long term. Sounds as if he's being reasonable, which is a nice change from usual London motorist behviour, but that's no reason why you should be left with a crocked bike.

Also, cycle lanes next to parked cars are crap and should be treated with profound caution and scepticism, as you now know. I'd be tempted to take advantage of your newly-bruised status to write to Tower Hamlets with copious gory pictures and ask that they either remove the parking or move the cycle lane away from it and install "do not overtake cyclists" signs. It'd be a favour to all of us.

  • Also, heal up soon and well.

  • This thread provides lots of general info http://www.lfgss.com/thread4213.html

Hopefully the man will still be reasonable when he has to pay for a new frame and any parts that were damaged. He sounds like he is being ok about it but remember; just because he is nice does not mean you should pay for his mistake. You are only asking for what you are owed so please do not let him off.
Did you get his details; phone number, car registration? Details of any witnesses? Just in case he does not show up tomorrow.
As Steff says you have learned a painful lesson about cycle lanes and about cycling too close to cars. Stay the width of a car door away from any parked car at all times. I am going to suggest you think about getting Cycle Training; you can get it for free or less than £10 and it will help you avoid situations like this in the future and you will be, and feel, safer. Please contact me if you want more details and I can arrange it for you.
Good luck tomorrow and heal up soon

  • No luck Mate! I hope the guy pays up but sometimes in the cold light of day he'll think... "hey I got away with that one!"
    Good Luck

At which point you get a V888 and talk to a solicitor.

  • Today had 3 close calls, first door opened swerved to miss lucky no cars close behind me,if i hadnt have screamed in terror the driver would open the door fully and i would be in the hospital, secondly driver suddenly anchors up for parking space, back wheel locked up and skidded managed to go round car, thirdly driver pulls out without looking ,i was in a cycle lane running along side parked cars.i gotta get out of the habit of riding close to parked cars allowing cars room to pass like i have done for the last 35 years

  • ^Yes! I hate to keep going on about it and being a bore but the number of experienced riders I have taught who ride in the door-zone is surprising. Even Tfl leaflets advise riding wide these days. Reculver: why not take a Cycle Training lesson? You have nothing to lose and I can help you arrange it.
