FIrst and foremost i'd like to apologise for my ignorance, i'm just getting interested in biking proper and so I still have a lot to learn. Currently in the prelim stages of a fixed gear project and need some advice.
I'm hoping to get a front aerospoke yet I have noticed they are all sold as 'non-machined rims'. However, since my bike is gonna be for road use and I have nowhere near enough confidence to ride w/o at least a front brake, I really want to be using a rim brake. Will this ruin the wheel? Since what i'm getting is coloured, will the brake strip through to show a carbon black or will it stil be the same colour through anyway?
sorry for my silly question and thanks againnn for your help

They all have a metal braking surface. All aerospokes are black plastic painted in various different colours. I think you can choose whether the braking surface is painted or not.
If you buy a solid coloured wheel, running a brake will ruin nothing but the paint.
The paint quality is pretty bad, it will chip and flake off very quickly.
Also, all aerospokes aren't completely true (they all have a bit of wobble as they spin), but it shouldn't affect the braking.

I have a front machined arrospok and it runs fine with a front brake, but as our Arrospok importer says above the paint will just rub off anyway if you get a non machined

do the current gen come in machined variations also? if so why make any non machined ones? do machined ones cost more? :S

All the rims are machined. The choice is just whether the paint covers the machined surface or not.
They're basically ABS plastic molded round a velocity aerohead rim, with an aluminium/chromoly hub.

That's not a bad price considering it's $100 extra minimum if you want coloured ones direct from aerospoke USA.

The rim is a Velocity Aerohead, they fit their plastic 'carbon composite' constructed wheel to it and then get little blind Mexican kids to come in and paint them.
They can't be bothered to prep the wheels properly so you get lovely bubbles and bits in the paintwork. Factory fresh Aerospokes also tend to come with these really natty vertical lines round the wheel which show up when reflecting in light.
Do what I did and get a nearly new second hand Aerospoke and get a professional to prep and paint it properly. I ran a brake on it for a little while and took off the gloss but then I polished it back up and rarely brake anymore.

I've got a good friend whose selling me a white front Aerospoke at a good price.
Now I know this is a good price, but the thing is I need to pay before I can see it, which is not something I'd normally do. I trust his opinion, but I have a niggle in my head and wondered if anyone out there who has had/used them could let me know if this sounds ok;
'...Hub is beautiful. the wheel has some chips which have been covered in paint but you have to look for them to notice...'
It's just the chips I'm worried about, is that normal that they would chip? etc, etc.
Cheers guys.
Yeah!
I quite enjoyed being really fast for a change and flying past all those flouro nodders
I think I used 3 gears max though.
