  • Just don't ride if the weather looks iffy...

  • Let's not fuck about here;

this is the same as chainsaw stuff?

  • Teflon is nasty stuff. Avoid.

Well it done the job for the last two weeks kept the mountain bike chain moving when it shouldn't .. upgrading the drive chain as soon as I can be arsed ... which means everything except for the chainring will be removed .

  • k.y

  • my chain is clean <-small amounts of silicone aerosol spray every day.

wax lube <-- too sticky. Like fly paper is to flies, wax lube is to dirt.

vegaetable oil <-- dries and become sticky ^ see above

olive oil <--- see above ^

Synthetic oil <-- doesn't dry but is contaminated by dirt after time and is very very dirty on your clothes.

  • Got a baby? Try baby wipes to quickly take off muck of your chain.

I use this stuff for everything - it removes marks left by felt tips from the walls :-)

  • this is the same as chainsaw stuff?

Don't know, but it's very thick, works for me, does pick up grime quickly, but then I clean my chain with spirits regularly so it's not an issue.

  • Let's not fuck about here;

    too thick, not worth it.

I never use any of those to keep my chain clean, if my chain is noisy, I just clean it carefully with a toothbrush while spraying something that's not recommended for chain; WD-40.

still using the same chain since last year.

or just spend more and get a ti-nitrate chain instead - they don't rust, even when it was snowing, and I use WD-40 just to spray the girt off.

  • Not worth what?

  • it.

  • £42 for a chain, yikes!

Still thanks for all the tips guys. I think I'll give mine a good clean this weekend, since most of the snow should be out of the way by then.

  • May I ask for a synopsis of this thread please?

  • I wouldn't use chainsaw oil, if you have ever used a chainsaw you will know that you need to top up the oil every time you refuel it. I know you're not doing the same revolutions as a chainsaw, and not pushing your chain through wood, but it's just not designed to stay on the chain for a long time. I would use something much thicker, I don't think chainsaw oil would be too good in the rain

I use castrol chain wax, mostly because it was left over when I sold my motorbike, but it works well and I'll definitely consider buying it again

  • I've just been using some wet lube I bought from Halfords a few months ago, just put some on and spin the chain round. I haven't actually worried about taking the crap off so far and it's been ok.

  • ...if you have ever used a chainsaw ...

    :)

  • £42 for a chain, yikes!

blimey, used to be something like £33, netherless still a great chain despite it's cost.

I have a chain saw, and as such, have experimented with the oil on my skidder chain. It works well (like most chain oils), it just doesnt last ( the major difference in oils IMHO). Bare in mind that the chain of a chainsaw is contantly pushed through wood. So its not surprising the oil gets wiped off. So its probably not designed to stick in the first place.

Removes everything except shit from babies arses. Should I try Muc-Off on the kid instead?

    Either use oil or not

Some people buy chains of Mr. T and they're expensive

  • May I ask for a synopsis of this thread please?

dont clean a chain with baby wipes and get your finger caught in between the cog and chain

dislocating the index distal phalange hurts like fuckery, and looks gross.

  • Pics please.

  • See Sheldon.

I run an £8 Nexus chain and it's been fine for some time now.

I lube with whatever I piss on the bike when I'm caught short leaving a pub*.

*I actually use Finish Line Cross Country and that ceramic Finish Line on good bikes.

Cleaning your chain is more important than lubing it. I bet you fuckers don't clean your chains properly. I know I don't.

  • Cleaning your chain is more important than lubing it.

I think what you lube your chain with is a lot less important than how much you use and how often you clean it. Use as little as possible and wipe off any excess and clean your chain at least every week and that will profit you more than any expensive so-called cycle specific dry or wet lube.

Not in the order they were posted in this thread, Mr SuperModerator, Sir.

  • I think you mean "order". I don't read posts in these shit threads. I just post to them. You don't get a post count like mine by "reading".

  • This thread encouraged me to clean my bike for the first time in a couple of months today, managed to get my finger caught between the sprocket and chain, fuck me did it hurt!

Im glad its not just me thats done that. and yes it motherfucking hurts!
