I think the Latynka would be Kijiv, but, taking my cue from the majority of Ukrainians, I resist Latynka as much as I resist the Russified form, Kiev.

Now that I've looked a bit harder, I've found an i with diaeresis, so in future, when directly addressing you on the subject of the Capital of Ukraine, I'll write Kiïv so that you don't have to trouble your poor little head over funny foreign letters. To everybody else, I'll continue to use Cyrillic, since you seem to be the only person who has such a struggle.

That's strange. Why do you feel the need to use the cyrillic, even though we have no yi in English, considering you are posting on an English language forum? It also suprises me that someone so worldly and well versed in languages as yourself that you would do something so inconsistent as to use the lowly latin alphabet spelling of Vladimir Putin and 'ms' Zhukova? At least be consistent with your linguistics.

I'm sure that's true, as it always is with protests everywhere - a large group of well-meaning and peaceful people provides cover for a small group of nutters who just want to have a crack at the cops. We've all seen it enough times in London, after all. On the other hand, there would be no large well-meaning group on the streets to provide such cover if Yanukovich hadn't set out to sell Ukraine down the river to the very nasty Russian regime.

Also Tester I don't know what Google-fu you're using, but it's shit. You have spelled Kiev wrong, that isn't how you spell it in Ukranian (which I would write in cyrillic, but like you i don't have a fucking cyrillic keyboard). Not that I am using this as my basis, but the wikipedia article on Kiev has the spelling. The Russian speaker in the bed next to me says tht not only does yi not exist in English, but nor does it exist in Russian cyrillic or Ukranian cyrillic. I think what you meant was ye. Not only that, but it was a waste of time to try to (incorrectly) translate the word into cyrillic, seeing as the English transliteration Kiev perfectly suits the purpose, and is a true representation of the Ukranian.

Because in using Київ/Kijiv/Kiïv, I'm making a quite specific political point, whereas none of the other Slavic words in my post calls for such signposting.

Also, I'm whimsical in my use of native proper nouns - I'll often refer to Deutschland, but sometimes Germany. I hardly ever pronounce Paris correctly except when speaking to French people, yet I nearly always say Milano even though I don't speak Italian.

However, yi (ї) in Ukrainian is not the same as ye (e/є) in Russian/Ukrainian, and for that reason Russian pronunciation of Киев is not the same as Ukrainian pronunciation of Київ
