  • Wow! That Whale story MUST have been the inspiration for the children's short story 'Greensleeves' by Paul Jennings from the book 'Uncanny'.
Anyone else read it as a kid (he's an Australian author).

(Below Synopsis ripped from some site)

(The book Weirdest Stories has 26 stories, but I’ve chosen one it’s called Greensleeves)

Stage 1: Challenge Overcoming setbacks|stirving to do your best|decisions

    Title: Greensleeves

    Author: Paul Jennings

Plot Summary: in the story a boy named greensleeves, lives with his father in a caravan park, there poor, and his father hasn’t got much money, his job is to take wood and throw it away, he doesn’t get a lot of money doing this, one day, there was a whale that got stuck on the beach, near them, it had died, and the smell was terrible, the council workers, tried everything to get rid of it, there tried using a crane, fisherman tried pulling it to sea, but the whale was too big, and it broke the cable, the mayor got sick and tried, of the local’s to remove it, so he put up a $5000 reward, who ever could remove it. Greensleeves and his dad, said there could do it, because he had some gelignite sticks, and the next day, there borrowed some gas mask, and his father couldn’t go down to the whale, so Greensleeves, had to go down, when he already stuck the 16 gelignite sticks, the mayor, greensleeves and his father, drove away from they, them they blew it up!,”whoopeeeeeee” the father yelled we’re getting $5000, meaning we can invest in a house, when the whale blew up, there was nothing left, on the sand, but when he looked back the whales pieces, were everywhere in the town, the mayor got really angry, and said that $5000, isn’t going to get it to you!, now i have to spend it on the clean up on the town, there was pieces of whale everywhere in the towns, on TV posts and lamps. Greensleeves felt much said and his father felt even worst, so there went to the caravan park. Later that day a minister came to see greensleeves and asked him if he was the boy that went down the whale. Greensleeves replied “yes”, the minister showed him a picture of Ambergris, he said that that stuff makes the best smell ever, then greensleeves, said yes! I found it on top of my caravan when I was cleaning it, so there all rushed over to the caravan and found it, his father got $10,000 reward for that. And they invested in a house.

    Character Studies:

Dad: The father of greensleeves, works for a woodwork company, doesn’t get paid much.

Greensleeves: The son of Dad is also poor, because his father cannot afford much.

Mayor: The Mayor of Port Niranda, a wealthy mayor, and also loving to all his Port Niranda.

Minister: Perfume Marker, a wealthy maker, very famous, for his good smelling perfume.

Type of book: The type of book, it’s adventurous

Main Message: From my point of view, the main message of the book, is that when your poor, doesn’t mean you don’t have anything, and you can still believe in yourself.

    Themes: Challenge|Decisions|Overcoming setbacks|Striving to do your best|

Recommendations: I strongly recommend this book; it’s a very good read, if you’re in to adventure, and weird stuff.

Rating: 10/10 I choose this rating because I really enjoyed the book, it was my type of reading, the adventures, and the twists

Talking about a more serious fail...

  • ^ Ha!

  • Appeared in the site office today

  • Health and Safety whistleblower helpline >>>

  • ^^ Hopefully troll, if not mega fine.

  • It's probably a fire exit but not a normal exit, alarmed door behind it or somesuch.

  • No, it used to be a real exit to the Portacabin we work in on site, but they have now extended the Portacabin so that it leads to a meeting room (which doesn't have an exit door). So the paper sign is helpful for those who don't know the works have been done, but H&S should probably take the fire exit sign down, or at least rotate it 90deg anti-clockwise
