  • i just got this on ebay spur of the moment.
was a quite a poor listing, and diddn't say what groupset it was, just said campag.... so it's a bit of a gamble... but we'll see!
    it's a hill special built in 1980.

  • I'm surprised so many people are slagging the lo-pros at the moment...yet everyone seems happy to be buying fairly low end 80's road bikes with nasty paint jobs....is it just because they're all 'retro' ?

No offence Rob...i'm sure yours is nice....but you know what i mean.

  • calm down dear.

it's only a bike.... and i quite like the colour, it's better than poo brown. (which coincidently i quite like too)

  • I'm not excited.
Was just curious....people post a pic of an old 80's raleigh with a fancy paint job, which you could have got in a kays catalogue for £5 a week for 50 weeks and get all excited and ooh look at the paint....when in reality it's just a pretty shit road bike...especially by modern standards.

And like i said...i'm not meaning yours Rob. :)

  • they seem to vary in quality though. the misconception of 531 being awesome pushing the price up for old frames and higher quality stuff going unnoticed because it isn't lugged or is made from different tubing. my pegoretti being a prime example. made by one of the top framebuilders in the world out of columbus's best steel but i only paid £600 for it.
the real bargains are late 80's early 90's oversize tigged steel frames that just aren't trendy any more. stiffer and lighter but still ride like a steel bike.
by the time you have paid over the odds for a noodly heavy steel bike with a bit of rust and paid for a paint job and some decals you are nearly at the cost of a new custom british frame of better quality steel.

  • so where does, say, a bob jackson or a mercian sit then mr. smith? do you think they're too precious about tradition or do they still have benefits? genuine question.

  • I don't think Mr Smith's point has anything to do with tradition....more about people overlooking good frames simply because they're not made with traditional techniques or 'known' tube sets.
A good bike is a good bike whatever...but just because it says 531 it doesn't make it awesome.

  • That's why i asked in the first place, because i don't understand people getting so excited about fancy lugs or 80's fluro paint jobs when the frame is actually not that good..just 'retro'.

  • i only got that Hill because it seemed like a bargain. it's my first road bike, and i won't be keeping it forever.
i think it would have been a bit stupid to go an blow £1000+ on something i'm not sure i'm even going to get into properly. give it a year and i may well do that, but not right now.
and also, i needed something to do tht DD on.

Scott, I think you meant "just 'old'". Otherwise I agree with you, and with MrSmith.

  • Nah...'old' isn't cool...'retro' is cool....apparently.

  • Well to be honest I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting an old bike that's not as efficient or high performance as a newer bike... there's nothing wrong with buying a good bicycle for mainly aesthetic reasons... it's no different than buying anything in life... people buy a lot of stuff that looks better than it something which would do the job much better...

  • i needed something to do tht DD on.

    wuss.

Scott - the lo pro backlash was inevitable.
    I blame Dale.

I'm happy with mine, its comfy and fits like a glove.
I wish i could ride it further, but I can't find a brake that fits.
I'm considering turning it into a TT machine for funsies.

  • only 2mins to swap over

yeah except the fact that the current forks are 1" threaded so have to find some 1" carbon ones and then buy the adaptor from M Part to allow me to use the 105 headset on there.
I'll do it sometime over summer.
