  • This is my new project. Carlton road bike. Needs lots of work, looks mega ratty but rides like a dream. 531 tubing, Mafac breaks and break components, Milremo stem. Adding campag rear derailleur thanks to unklesouth, nos Williams 52t cottered crank. Will respray Black, keep decals and turquoise bits. rebuild wheels. going to try and keep everything close to original as possible . I'm not sure of the age. been told it is most likely before Raleigh took them over in the 60's, i would love more info about this bike.

See here for working out the age from the frame number :-

  • Nice @ ben g, but would putting a 650 fork and/ or wheel affect geometry of frame? I'm not an expert so would be interested to know. I'm assuming the build of proper lo-pros would take this into account?

  • I have a terrible feeling this is the new thing for 2009, stock up on them white tyres while you can!

me too, not my thing at all but i can see whats cool about them..

I just built this up this morning. The photo\s inverted for some reason so it isn't actually left hand drive, it just looks like that. Probably do some better quality photos later.

    i really like that

recently got a new (almost) matching front wheel, need to either sort out some 650 forks or get a 700 wheel, as the brake obviously doesn't reach! haha. STILL a work in progress, but i have a new job now so that means more money to spend! :)

stickers will be coming off the wheel, but just haven't done it yet! :)

dude, add another link to your chain! it may feel alright but that back wheel really wants to jump out of those dropouts. it told me so.

    edit: nice build tho ;)

  • best to get 700c wheel Ben, after all the frame is designed for such wheel.

  • also in those pics the front brake looks as if its set up to brake on the tyre! but forgive me if i'm blind. as i said before though nice build and i love the colour

i am i just need to find them! haha

yeah i know, i just couldn't resist this wheel! haha

you aren't blind, i just put the wheel on really quickly before i drove to swindon for the weekend, not set up at all, just wanted to see what it would look like! :)

    Thanks for the comments guys.

  • thanks ste_s, looked all over the bike, can only find an "X" under the bottom bracket shell, only date that "X" is linked to is 1935, dont think this is right??? maybe when i strip the paint, looks like it was re-painted before, i will find some more numbers or letters.

  • @Luckyskull - Look on the left rear drop out. My 1959 Carlton has the frame number there, my more recent 1982 one has the frame number on the bottom bracket shell

  • this thread just gets better and better

dave531531, your Aende lo pro is lovely. wouldn't change thing
alex, your Cooper is special. still find that chainring intimidating. btw, didn't pop into Cavendish for a chainring in the end has picked up a Dura Ace one for a tenner on the bay.
mr smith, sweet. i know you are going to build that beautifully
tika - wow, well done. love the wheels.
cohen, that frame looks pretty lush too.
scott, wow, from no to two lo-pros just like that. love that merckx too.

    what he said ^

  • plagiarist, get that road bike together!

  • I like this thread; proves you can jerk off, pat yourself on the back and give the thumbs up/down to another person all at the same time.

:-) right must get the order memorised.

    jerk,pat,thumb. jerk,pat,thumb.jerk,pat,thumb.jerk,pat,thumb.jerk,pat,thumb.jerk,pat,thumb.
    jerk,pat,thumb.jerk,pat,thumb.jerk,pat,thumb.jerk,pat,thumb.jerk,pat,thumb.

    then then

  • That's the style :)

  • Just finished this for my girlfriend (brakes now connected.)

    Thanks fella.

    First lesson in a minute!

It was fun building it anyway.

  • It's great Jung, I'm sure she'll love riding that.

Maybe keep an eye out for some classic old brake levers to complete the look.

  • a faggin as a 1st bike! what is this world coming to !

very nice build ;) well done.

  • got it back from Armourtex on friday , waiting for some finishing parts from ebay. couldnt wait to take her out for a burn , So dressed her with what was in the parts bin, bit of a mish mash.

always a good feeling, the first outing on a new bike.

  • woah banging bike!

  • Finally finished my first build based on a resprayed Genesis Flyer frame, crank and forks from the forums classifieds. I've got many other parts from the forum and well as from friends and spare parts that I've had already. I managed to put this together for under £300 and it's been a great experience. :)

I will gradually make more changes over the next couple of months but for now this will do.

Did you mount the decals yourself and clear coat ? Or did Armourtex do it for you ?
