I have tyres that say max is 120psi, can I go higher safely, and if so, how much by?

depends how high your rim is rated to aswell, i think on average most are rated to about 130
this is with crishers obvs

The question is, why would you?
A very high pressure would increase the tyres sized slightly, closer to a 25 than a 23 with no real benefit.

I might have a lead on a track bike to match my road bike, a la TM.
Actually just like TM, as this will also be 853 with OS downtube. But I was the first to join the club...

Probably more pertinent to ask what's the maximum PSI rating for the rim, as too high a pressure could lead to a fairly bad experience in that regard.

Pre-strip.
Yellow gilco tubed Colnago with really tight clearances. Fruit's old frame?
If so the clearance was too tight and he actually crashed it because the wheel made contact with the downtube. There was talk of tubes being replaced but that was years ago and I have no idea if it ever happened.

II ended up paying £300 for the Vigorelli f+f plus the cranks and a second set of forks being done black.
bloody hell - I suppose it is faster now though, so money well spent.

You put the idea in my head though, plus I've still not put the road bike together.... You could still be the first to father twin donobros....

Anyone know how close a tyres max pressure is to real limits?
AFAIK, the ETRTO test regime involves a no-load blow-off test at twice the rated maximum pressure, but it's done on calibrated test rims much stronger than anything you can buy.

If you want to make your bike slower and less comfortable, you can find clincher tyres and rims which can be safely used at up to 10 bar, which is just short of 150psi. If you're so fat that your current tyres are getting a lot of snakebites at 120psi, you need bigger tyres, not harder ones.

Classic Edscobollocks. Taking your comment literally, anything over 24mm would be closer to 25 than to 23, but even allowing that, the idea that a tyre which is 23mm at 120psi could be stretched to 24mm without breaking is comical.

LOL! I am very heavy, but not really that fat!
It's more about finding an optimal pressure for the load weight and tyre size, and a 25c rear requires too high a pressure for 15% tyre drop under full load, although was hoping rims with a 19mm width would sort it out (but is actually 29'er rims, so will not over inflate).
But that does confirm what I was thinking, 28c rear is the way to go for me.

There was an article not long ago, about this that the increase in tyres pressure over max pressure can cause it to stretch slightly.
It was from someone who work for Zipp or HED, unfortunately I can't find the said article on here, but there was a lots of reference to Roubaix.

This is not in doubt, there is no material with an infinite elastic modulus. I was just questioning the magnitude of the change.
