i just picked this up at HH this morning...
I'm gonna buil it up now with whatever i've got lying around to check it's not too big for me!
if it fits, some puppies may be killed. -
• #8830
that's lovely
-
• #8831
Sweet jesus, please don't start filing things off that.
:o
(conditional congratulations on picking it up though)

aarrrrrggghhh! i haven't got a f*cking long enough chain in my parts box.
i'm gonna have to wait til tomorrow to ride it now!
i think i might just be able to get away with the size, the TT reach is a bit long, but a shorter stem should cure that.it's not a real Gillot by the way, someone has gone to alot of effort to make it look like one though. the head tube badge is very rare apparently.
TBH, i'm really not bothered about puppy killing, as it's not a real Gillot.
it would be a shame to spoil the beautiful paint job though.i will prob leave as is though, because i won't be keeping it forever.

I agree 100%. There's no point trying to deny it's past, it looks awesome. That's a pretty unique bike.

cheers man, i've allways had modern bikes, and this is my first ever lugged 531 frame, so i guess i should put some more classic components on it it at somepoint.
but i think i'm just gonna thrash the shit ut of it like this first. -

Wait... What was happening at Herne Hill this morning? A jumble? How come I didn't know???
-

There was a thread...somewhere
Very lush and green Mr. Hoops. I bet they had some chains for sale at HH....
-
• #8839
yep, shit loads.
i didn't think my chain would be about 5 links too short!
i'm gonna have to get one from evans now, which will cost a bomb.
do they even sell track chains? -
• #8840
You are likely to get some nasty cheap chain as your only choice. That's my experience.
What chain, I have some spare links floating around here somewhere...
-
• #8841
They'll sell a perfectly ok BMX/Singlespeed chains so yeah. Although I bet they couldn't sell you a halflink.

Chains are cheap. There's nothing wrong with a £5 KMC.

My experience is different with the cheapeest KMCs and SRAMs that are available at the larger bike store chains. But then again I am 100kg and not easy on bike components.
-
• #8844
thanks for the offer aroogah, but i'll just grab one tomorrow, i could do with a new one anyway.
a cheap chain wouldn't bother me, as this is just a knock around bike anyway. -

Fair enough. I weigh 65kg! I agree all chains are not born equal.

1+. KMC are pretty good at that price, put it in all of my bike (apart from the Bob Jackson), and still running as smoothly as ever.

Hiya.
Im obviously new here, so thought id introduce myself and let people know whats happening etc..My names Tony, live not too far from Brighton in Sussex.
Im 29, been riding bikes, well, same as everyone really, since first able to.I mainly ride bmx, and ride alot of park, and get all over the country riding.
I also own a few other bikes, so far the collection stands with,1980's (ish) Diamant
1996 Kona Lava dome in Orange
1998 Kona Fire Mountain
2007 Specialized BigHit DH
2008 Boardman Road Comp
2009 Proper TTL Custom bmx
and loads of random frames and bits.Onto the project.
Believe this is either late '80's or early '90's Bike.
Bought this from a friend at work as was his training bike for Triathlons and he hasnt raced for years now and was left in his garage.
Thought it would be a good starter project for someone new to the scene.
Ive spent the last few days looking at my options.
Had a ride of a Bowery '84, but was too 'race' for me.
Had a try on a genesis flyer and SE Lager. Very nearly bought the lager in white, but walked away for some reason.
Also looked at a 2008 Langster as was only £320. But im not really into the racer frames.
(I already have a Boardman Road with aero bars hanging on my wall). Then popped to a shop over Chichester and had a chat to a guy who really knows his stuff.
Was offered a Montana Track frame for silly cheap and then build it up into a decent fixie.
But after really looking into it all, I was never really struck with anything.I knew I wanted a retro build with an older frame, but wasnt sure how to do it.
So I ended up buying a pair of System EX hubs, Mavic Rims and spokes to suit. Then just the Token 15T cog. With a bit of a fiddle and a few cups of tea while building the wheels, Ive ended up with the start of the build.
Im still yet to build up the front wheel, but also still have a few other things to do on it.
So far very pleased, and so much fun outside with my brothers pissing themselves laughing.SPEC.
56cm Diamant frame
Internal cable run
Campag dropouts with tensionerSanko Fork Blade
Ofmega Linea crankset
Shimano 105 Front Brake
Odyssey Trigger Lever (Temporary)
Front Wheel - Mavic MA40 Rim on believe 105 Hub (Temp)
Rear Wheel - Mavic MA3 on System Ex Hub
Campag Seat post
'Flite' Saddle
Bargain Bin Handlebars
Unbranded New 23c Tyres (Unridden)First looked...
then at 5pm...
then I found a chain and got it running..
Still more to do, but its late now.
any advice and info would be so helpful. Criticsm is always good.
cheers everyone

I just built this up this morning. The photo\s inverted for some reason so it isn't actually left hand drive, it just looks like that. Probably do some better quality photos later.
Sweet!
Have you laced both wheels 4x or is it just my eyes?

My Casati track frame is almost done, with just a new pair of wheels to be fitted once I've sourced a new tub for the front. The bike got it's first outing at Herne Hill yesterday and handles like a dream, a much smoother ride than the Merckx it replaced.
I'll post some proper pics once the new wheels are fitted but here's one showing the current build.

yeah i did, i'll get the digicamera out later so you can see some photos that do it a bit more justice haha
