  • Ditch the rims and re-build with a useful size.

Ditching perfectly fine rims/ wheels on a budget build is a no go (and it's a good wheelset), I'll see what the germans say 'bout the tires, cause I need to fill those gaps! Old Schwinns would be good, but don't know where to get hold of 'em? Any chance of managig to stretch a folding 559 tire on the rim?

No way. If beads could stretch 2% with even brutish mounting forces, they would blow off the rims at quite low pressure.

  • ^^ 'K
    What about my other suggestion?

  • I just picked up that Shimano caliper. Much as I don't like the company, I must admit that it's a wonderful bit of kit for £20. More powerful, easier to set up and possibly lighter than the old Campagnolo Veloce it's replacing. I'll just have to buff the Shimano logo off when I get a minute.

  • Try acetone first.

  • thrown together, still lots of things to fine tune

Awesome!! So jealous! Really need to gel on my Pompetamine frame for something nicer that'll take an enve fork.

Just out of interest, what are the wheels and do you know what it weighs?

This was the first hit on google of course, still not enough to fill the gaps in 26" MTB frame I think... I guess this is all just a test of patience and tolerance... Stem and BB were seized, got them off with different soaking methods, the stem is of the akward 21.2 size (how safe is it to sand the stem down to 21.2 - the walls seem to be more then 3mm thick and my dremmel is to weak to go through the steerer - drill maybe?)... The original brakes should fit the wheels and I got all the parts for drivetrain (1x8, 105 cranks and a derauiller, with a 8-speed Shimano Kassete, SRAM chain and grip shifter), which means if I manage to get hold of the tires and solve the stem problem it should get build up quickly... Current costs are 70 Euro for the frame (was a full bike, but ditched everything except headset and BB) and 60 Euro for drivetrain parts, the wheelset was a gift...

the wheels are syncros 25mm wide tubeless rims, dt revo, wtb laser lite hubs. Got them cheap from the finnish fixie forums. Kind of temporary solution as I dont have the cash to get my dream setup (nor know what that would actually be).

No idea of the weight. There is still some parts I want to change; for example the pedals are 420g/pair and I wanna go eggbeaters, changing the disc rotors to kcnc razors, which are 73grams a piece, so about 60g-70 saved there as well. Gonna check the weight when it is done :-)

  • ANOTHER pic of this with the new stem, sorry for hogging the thread.

    New stem this time.

  • £59.99 is probably about as cheap as you'll find a 24h rear road hub unless you buy Novatec from Taiwan and take a punt on whether you get charged import taxes. Rebuild with DT Comps is likely to be around £40-£60 depending on which shop you go to, and how much of the work you do yourself. If you take the wheel apart and lace it yourself, you'll save some money and learn the first stage of rolling your own, though I wouldn't recommend tensioning a 24h carbon wheel as your first build.

Would this be a worthwhile upgrade on the Planet-X for £8 or is it much the same? I can't see a stated weight for the PX but this looks good.

If you match the 28mm tire with a 45mm fender I think it would look alright, but fenders may not be part of the plan. 130 euros is creeping up into the range of where the bike should be how you want it, not what's available to make it rideable. I'm interested to see how it'll turn out - pics please!

  • Very nice Negaatio, damn fine looking bike that.
A word of caution on the super light rotors, they distort easily as they heat up, and once out of true, they will forever be going out, no matter how many times you straighten 'em.
But that is a lovely looking setup mate, please post once you've got it dialled in! :D

Strong effort Indra, that stem looks tons better.

Sounds pretty good for a temporary set of wheels. I'm currently trying to figure out what my best options are for my next set of wheels. It's between Stan's ZTR Arch EX (which I can get trade) and H+Son Archytypes (which I 'm working on getting at trade), for rims and Hope or DT Swiss 240s for hubs. Again it'll probably come down to what I can get at trade.

    What brakes are you running?

  • I'll be racing at Hog Hill at 1pm today, say hello if you're around.

Looking good mate - how did you get on this afternoon?

  • Studs in the front, finnish winter. The brakes are hayes cx5

  • thrown together, still lots of things to fine tune

    The results are simply.. Increbidle

  • thrown together, still lots of things to fine tune

    Madre de dios

No word of a lie, uber porn, do want etc.

  • Needs Zen!!

  • Needs a lot more than that I'm afraid...

Might be worth investing the extra to get 11-speed compatibility if you think you might upgrade to 11 before you replace the hubs. Apart from that, they're both mid-range Novatecs, not much to choose between them.

    Super nice !

  • Stunning build! Why the different tyres? I hear tan wall is making a comeback: http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/tyres-road-tri-track-rigid-challenge-grifo-32-pro-rigid-tyre/chaltyrr210

That's the black-black shite version tho.
