  • Yup, looks like option 3 to me. Thought they had an almost galvanized look to them.
Haven't had an older bike to tidy up for ages and really looking forward to this one. Clean, grease, bearings and cables and it's all good.
Toying with the idea of a mafac handlebar bag support...

  • regarding crank stripping.

    I've done it before

first you need to determine if it's paint or anodizing. it can look very similar.
scratch it, sand it, scrape etc.

if it's paint use a paint stripper.

if it's anodizing (as mine were) use caustic soda. sold as drain cleaner.
just dip the cranks in the solution until the anodizing rubs off. very easy, but do it outside and be careful with the chemicals.
stop the proces with a weak acid bath.
in my case it did not affect the axle or bonding the slightest.

then polish the cranks and protect with carnauba wax.

  • Thought they had an almost galvanized look to them

Possible. Galvanised was common on motorcycle spokes, and there were some galvanised bicycle spokes although they were never offered to me as an option from about the late 70s onward, presumably because they offered no benefit in either cost or performance compared with the other three.

  • if that is your work you described up there, it's very impressive, well done

  • Whatever they may be they're cleaning up just peachy and ping in a satisfactory manner. Good enough for now.
Got monday off work next week, plan is to strip the drivetrain and polish the cranks and mech. Not looking forward to cotterpins again but we'll see. Then a process of removing, polishing and replacing each part one at a time so I don't end up with another bike scattered across our tiny flat..

    thank you.
added a before photo to the original post.

  • Were you not a bit worried about the holes that burnt through?

  • Making life harder for Chris atm. #dreambikeinprgrs

  • Such good fortune edmundro.
    What a score.

  • Having some old glue on some tubular rims isn't bad is it? It will still bond to the tyre.

  • You can reactive glue with acetone or at worst white spirit

  • Cheers Gaston! My first time doing tubular.

  • Quick q, did a search, what size spanner do I need for old school bb's? C Record Pista and/or Gipiemme Pista? Fanks.

  • 14 or 15 mm but they need to have a thinner wall. A table vise and a finer metal file is needed to file it down to spec. I know this cause I need one myself ha!

    Misread, thought it said bolts.

    I think that's a 36mm or a 32mm one?

  • You've done a drug. Think they are 36mm?

  • Yes, too much tubular glue.

  • 36mm.

    32mm are for headsets

  • ^ that.

  • Thanks Apollo!

  • killed gatorskin, got romin evo expert, productive day.

  • Changed pedals, new brake lever.. still not had time to build it's wheels up... sigh.

Also have this to mount sometime soon -

So all the parts are here, just got to find the time.

can you let me know what bb you use once fitted and you are riding it

  • Worked on the right crank with wire brush and sand paper,
hopefully I will love this saddle

  • Did you blur yourself out in the mirror, or are you a ghost?

  • blur

  • Little progress on Liz's Langsett tonight:
Front brake disassembled, cleaned and awaiting new washers and og kool-stop replacement pads.
Front mudguard off and shined up. Just need to scrub rust off struts.
Belleri porteur bars fitted to original stem. Got some old weinmann town levers that'll do til I find cheap Mafac inverse levers.
Seatpost out, will find proofide in the cupboard tomorrow to give saddle a once over.

Cable inners ordered, keeping old ribbed outers. Chain appears in perfect so will just degrease and regrease. Hoping the same is true of the freewheel. Teeth look fine.
Black smooth tape on it's way.
