  • because it looks like a unipack?

Hmmm was looking at it for a while trying to figure it out and I think you're right, possible new colour way for Unipack.

They'd probably put orange rims on it.

  • thanks, not sure about aluminium frames though its pretty harsh to ride even with that seatpost.

i was thinking about painting it but i'm just going to let it get scratched and dirty, i always lock with 2 locks minimum - i take no chances [i live east]

get as much sticker as you can and plastered it all over the bike.

  • Move west.

  • not an everyday ride for me, too fast due to it´s geometry, pronto.

Which is another reason to fit 700c forks...slightly slacker angles, slightly slower steering=everyday ride.

  • why have i not seen scott's storck yet?

Cos you weren't at polo on sunday or easties tonight...
why don't i bring it to YOU...actually why don't i bring it to you...and while you check it out i can cook your dinner, clean your house and do your laundry for you!

    :)

Sounds like a good deal asm! :)

So whats the finished weight, Scott? Seemed you were going all weight weenie on it.

  • Got my BJ Vigorelli home a couple days ago and am in the process of building it up. The finish is stunning, flamboyant green with silver lug lines. I installed the headset using a homemade headset press and a 30in long steel pipe with a suitable ID. I'm clumsy, but I managed it without causing any damage, bloody stressful though.

He won't have a clue. Scott's idea of weight weenie goes something like this:

Buy light parts > put them together > ride it > laugh at people who know how much their bikes actually weigh

  • With all the stuff that's been going on recently, I'm not sure if I want to post my geared project on here, but anyway, here goes...

Won this on eBay and picked it up on Tuesday - Dawes Audax, about 7 years old. In the flesh it's actually in unbelievably good condition - no chips, no rust and everything works *reasonably *well (for Shimano). Came with 105 clip pedals (which are now for sale) and a 7-speed 105 wheelset. It even has a Rolls seat, which was a nice bonus. Need to rebuild the rear wheel so it's 8-speed, but apart from that it's tickety-boo.

One problem though - I find it bloody hideous. The colours are awful, and I'm not a fan of the Dawes decals either. I want to strip it down and paint it in a battleship grey colour so it's less stealable, then add royal blue bartape and eventually blue Schwalbe Stelvios, but was just wondering what others think. Should I just stick with the existing paintjob (since it's so well done) or just strip and spray?

  • would be a shame to strip it etc

  • +1 for respray

Like i said before...it was never my intention to build a super light bike.
I chose parts first for quality/performance...sometimes price...then if i could get that from something that was also light it was a bonus...as Tynan pointed out, there are plenty of places i can lose weight on it.

Finished weight makes no difference to me...if it's ever near some scales i'll weigh it for you...but it is what it is.

  • 5.5 lb

  • would be a shame to strip it etc

I'm also keeping in mind that I'm going to be going abroad on it too - maybe even to the Middle East and South America. In that situation I don't want a bike that looks stealable, or that attracts too much attention. A muted grey might do me well, while at the same time would help me maintain my hipseter credentials...

  • New project, well revived as I had it on hold whilst I got track bike up an running.

    Frame:

Got campag cranks on it now, so I need to cheaply source some chrome forks (http://www.velokit.co.uk/cart_productdetails.asp?PRODUCTID=3411 - these look cheap but probably ok?)

Will need a cheap headset saddle and seatpost and some wheels.. Hopefully before my back breaks on the carlton!

  • Those forks are fine, but the brake calliper hole is slightly too small for newer brake callipers. You'll need to file it down a bit somehow.

What brake calliper is that? I have been looking everywhere for an all silver aero lever!

    Lovely frame!

  • Just finished, although will upgrade a couple of parts in due course.

  • I've just won this on t' bay. Thinking it really needs something doing to the finish of it but a full chrome finish isn't cheap so what do you all think of painting it and then chroming the lugs or should I just bite the bullet and pay for the chroming?

Also if anyone knows anything about it's history I'd be eternally grateful.

  • if you give it to Argos Cycles (bristol) they'll do whatever you want with it, and do a good job. They are not cheap though. Mercian and Bob Jackson also take on renovations.

I'd have it stripped, primed and enameled. Maybe get the headtube in a second colour? Those lugs are very ornate as they are.

  • just bite the bullet and pay for the chroming

    this gets my vote

    Looks like a postman's bike.

Thanks for the link, I've been looking for some cheap forks, though don't know about the lamp bracket.

These don't have lamp brackets though at £12...can you buy too cheap?
