Yep. Wasn't sure which way round but one is hella helical, and they may be of different weights.

so is well comfy over rough roads, but is a pig to get up hills.
I see you've already decided. However Norwich isn't known for it's Cat 1 climbs. It does have a lot of rough roads though!

Bah. After spending time and money on derailleurs, shifters, cables, new shifters, and new cables, I think I've decided to take my Gazelle back to singlespeed. Well not quite singlespeed - keeping the 42/34 rings and having 16/24 sprockets - giving a 42/16 ratio of 70" and a 34/24 ratio of 39" (bail-out gear, or dirt tracks).
At least it'll be a quick conversion back to gears if I change my mind again. I wish I had room for both.

That contrast between the rat forks and the shiny headset is the bolloks though
Sorry, I'm using this as an excuse to repost what is probably my favourite bike photo what I have taken....

EDIT, or am I just being weak, and will 39 inches be enough up Hardknott Pass?
Should be enough unladen on a light roadie
I rode through it laden with a GI of 29 last year in the winter, that was just about perfect for the 33% section.

Viscount because it's free. You'll get stronger lugging it up hills and can do up the Dawes as and when.
Hills? In Norwich? No.

Yeah I saw your pictures, that's the inspiration for the trip actually, looks beautiful. Cheers for the advice, but I suspect you may be a stronger rider than me though! And my bike is not exactly light, and neither am I, although I'll be trying to keep the load down to a minimum. I am considering just keeping my current gearing, which works fine for 95% of my riding, and walking up Hardknott if necessary. Could be a long walk though!

Sorry, I couldn't point to Norwich on a map, was just going by what Stu had said.
Brake cables are helical, while gear cables are lateral*.
*maybe the wrong word but it works.
