and its definitely alloy.that olmo up there ^^^^ is fucking lush. sort out the saddle angle though (bars angle is minimal, I'd keep it).

I think the 5 speed would be a bit pointless if the range of gears is that wide, i was assuming the range would be more like an old 5 speed freewheel, we did look into and think about a single speed but she lives on a pretty big hill (well 2 actually) and she some times joins me on some longer rides on country lanes so i could be a struggle sometimes, so she could at least make it up and pedal down the hills with a 3 speed but then still have a nice simple reliable bike.
Actually the original plan before i found the charge was to set up a nice road frame as a 5 speed with an old school mtb index shifter on the bars, but as i'm sure many people here know derailleur gears could possible go tits up on a commuter style bike
The SRF 5 is the wide range 5 speed. They do narrower ones. It will be as simple and reliable as the 3 speed. As it sounds like her only bike, it seems sensible to have the extra range. But thats a matter of taste.
Deraileurs are a solid option. If you dont mind cleaning out grime, and keeping on top of the indexing.
The nice range of the last 5 speed option has me thinking of one for Mrs Smallfurry. I seem to have killed her BSO, by using it as a bike.

Shes riding a old 6 speed Peugeot now, the chain has fallen off a few times, got jammed up between the spokes, stuff like that, not good.

I've finally made the jump and put my frame and some components up for sale... don't feel right! :P
But it had to be done it just didn't fit me.
But it now means that until I sold enough that I can buy another, I'm without a bike.

MDCC: NO!, have a friends who rides Hudz, I've tried them a couple of times and hate them.. The fitting is crap (the two dimples underneath) and they rotate on the lever every time you change gear.. So definitly gonna stay with the black, original Sram..

I have the soft compound Hudz on some SR levers. I really like them.

It does.
My way of explaining the ratios to a customer; 1st gear is starting off/going uphill, 2nd is normal, and 3rd is a bit faster.

Can never understand why people would want to sell a custom bicycle.
As nice as the Rivendell are (and they're very nice), they may not have the same sense of appeal as a custom Robin Mather.

That is all.
Do you think they're better than the original campag ones? The hoods on my Spesh are paper thin now and slippy in bare hands/wet conditions, so need replacing...

I always feel I need more range when planning a bike in theory, sat at my desk. Yet feel tighter gear spacing is more important when I'm actually out riding. Its never striaght forward to second guess these things.
For referance, a hybrid commuter bike, with a 48.36.26 triple, and a 11-32 9 speed cassette. Has a range of 21.9" to 117.8".
I personally would'nt bother upgrading the 3 speed bike to the 5 speed hub. But if upgrading the single speed to a hubgear, I'd like the option of a the 5 speed. the top and bottom gears are definitly usable ones.
Like I say, its a matter taste I guess.

Depends on what you mean by better.Hudz are open that the soft compound Hudz arent going to last. But they do offer better cushioning, with I'd say qual grip. Not sure about wet performance. I still cant bring myself to ride the BMC if loooks like rain :/

I've got normal (Not "soft") Hudz on one bike and original campag on another, I prefer the hudz for gloveless riding but find the difference when using gloves is minimal.

I have the same range as the forementioned 48.36.26 with 11-32 cassette. But continuous, without a gap in gears*.
There may have been a
slightmassive weight penalty though.(*not achieving full overdrive at the moment i think. But a bit more tinkering and I will)

My tourer/audax/road bike in it's audax guise ready for a 200km on saturday
I also changed the stem from a 110mm reach to an 80mm reach as I had some neck pain after a 60mile ride recently, so I'm trialling a more relaxed upright riding position

Note the clearance on the rear wheel with it's 28c tyres, it's tighter than my fixed/low pro for gods sake...
Restricts me from using nice full length mudguards or for putting on larger tyres, although I can use nice strong road calipers and allows it to be a nice whippy road bike if I take off all the paraphenalia and stikc on skinny tyres
