I have a 0 degree 120mm X4 stem, and a Thomson layback post.
Arione clamped just about bang on in the middle of the rails.
The stem is as low as it can go on the steerer- the hydraulic master cylinder unit does act as a 2mm spacer mind you.

I'm gonna have to take meself down to Halfords tomorrow I think, I just can't see this all in my head.

Think I've got it, its down to the longer wheelbase and higher headtube position in relation to my current setup.
I've got a 150mm drop to the top of my bars which is giving me a lot of the saddle to bar distance I have and so makes up for the shorter top tube, plus the wheel base is totally different.
Will still need to go and check one out mind.

photo.JPG by monomaniac(tom), on Flickrcrapsticks, 56x53cm? aarhggh. I thought it was more like 58/58 hence didn't sell my spare kidney for it. 56/53 would have been better than perfect for me, grrrrrr

• #65006
shrink it to 53/53 and let me buy it? :)
-
• #65007
56/53 is 100% spot on for me,
Are you selling?

You hung like a T-rex Ed?
I got a random question/thinking out loud
So my girlfriend is very tempted to splash out on the charge hob 3, but she is un-sure about the colour and (limited) 3 speed hub, so i thought she could get the s-s/fixed red (she prefers it in red) hob and put a 5 speed hub on it to get a better range of gears. I think the standard hob 3 would be fine, but she is the one spending the money and she isn't as sure.
any opinions would be grate :)

What's the gear range on the two competing hubs?
Is she concerned about not enough high end, or low end?
I'd say the three is best for a townie, it's lighter too, maybe sell her on that aspect. -
• #65010
Sturmey says that they are the same weight!?
Whatever. -
• #65011
Seems like a sensible plan - is the frame spacing the same?
TBH depends on where she is riding, but given most here use one gear I'm not sure many people are going to suggest the need for more gears.
+1 to checkin the ratios.
Also fwiw I've just got a shopper with a 3 speed SA, and its great. #2 pretty much all the time, #1 for an incline or starting from lights, #3 for down hill.
Best bet really is for her to try one and see if it's lacking in range/increments.

still for sale! and although it's 56/53 the seat angle can push the distance between the seat post to the stem out - hard bike to size up!
interestingly i was tidying up and stuck the brompton next to it and you can see that the measurements are very similar!
photo.JPG by monomaniac(tom), on Flickrbad perspective but the handlebars and saddle line up almost perfectly

You get 256% instead of 177%, if you go with the SRF 5 (W). It basically equates to an extra gear either side. (If you dont mind the extra 1/2 kg, Alfine 8's can be found for the same price though.)
42:16 with 700x32 tyres.
SRF3
53.2"
70.9"
94,5"SRF5
44.3"
53.3"
70.9"
94.5"
113.4"Using a SRF5, and swapping to a 17 tooth sprocket gives 3 more usable mid gears (IMHO). With a better climbing gear, and a top gear that would actually get used (113.4" is a touch high IMO).
SRF5 (with 17t sprocket)
41.7"
50.0"
66.7"
88.9"
106.7"That^ would be my chioce. But it depends on how much of a range you think she'll need. I personally think 54" is a big climbing gear, and that 42" would be apprieciated.

Just commuted in on my fixed for the first time since she had an overhaul, the new ratio hurts my hips. Anyone want to buy a 13t DA track cog :)

^^^Commuting on a 13t, what the fuck!? What have you got up front?

• #65018
48t, standard...
-
• #65019
anything over 38t would be silly
-
• #65020
WAIT. this is on like a twenty or something, right?
-
• #65021
Because that'd be 75GI with a 50t up front...
-
• #65022
-
• #65023
well you could get away with slightly shorter cables....

Fair point. I'll take a look at it this weekend, having also just skimmed this Park Tools write up:

44T (=88GI)
On reflection, a bad choice. I was fed up with spinning on my commute, but this can >>>>>>>
Just trying work out sizing again.
How's yours setup Damnit?
I should have exact saddle nose to bar as you use, but I've been told a 55.5-56cm top tube and 110-120mm stem with 6.5-7cm saddle to BB setback should be right for me, I think because I have long thighs.
Which would kinda make the medium frame the right size, now I haven't been a medium anything for a very long time!
Do you use an inline post?
What stem length?
Its the 57cm top tube on the Boardman CX thats got me puzzled, thats pretty long, then with a 120mm stem, and a setback post, that all comes as stock.
Now thats a pretty stretched out bike, that as its for off road use, I would have thought it to be shorter if anything...
