  • Any particular reason for the interest?

    Cause it kinda seems a bit pointless unless you're doing mammoth treks or cycling through sand, as they're so much heavier than a mech and cassette.

    Was that to my question?

  • I'm thinking of trying a coaster brake. Had a very quick look online and found these espresso wheels with coaster hub. Does anyone know a thing about them? They seem heavy but I figure every coaster wheel will be, or not?

    Is there any obvious problem with these brakes that I should know?

  • I have ridden a few older bikes (test ride) with 3 speed Sturmey Archers and kick back hubs, but they always struggle to engage and the kick back brakes are pretty 'dull'

    but i'm hoping a new one will be different.

  • So has any one here used a 3 speed hub? or any type of geared hub, i spent the last hour trying to find out about them, but all i can find is pages of boring info but no reviews by people who actually used them.

    I've got one. on a Raleigh Twenty I picked up yesterday.......

  • Havent had a new project for a while, but looking forward to this...

    Havent got it yet, should get my mitts on it 7th July when back in the UK. In two minds on how to build it... i say two but really i have just had all and everything going thru my head! enjoying speculating what wheels are gonna be on it. feel like i've just asked a chick out on a first date and waiting for the day to arrive!

  • I've lost a number of frames on ebay by trying to get it as cheap as possible and then regretting not bidding more when the final selling price is a number i would have gone to, plus some. so i put in my max which i wouldnt regret losing it for and got it. happy boy but now a touch skint. final price 342.

  • period is what i want but i'm not sure i have the patience.... plus it will tend to be a more expensive project that way.... although. as the guinness adverts say. good things n that.

  • Well originally I think it was all campy super record post, bb and crankset. With some mavic wheels.. Can't recall the hubs he said was on it, with a cinelli 65 (I think) cockpit....

    But then I saw a beaut of a mavic 365 stem on here today and started thinking bout my mavic bullhorns, and a dark low aero/ flat rims to compliment the bars (wolber profil or campy omega type) laced with silver spokes n hubs.... Not yet decided on hubs, low or high, modern or more period.

    Fellas- throw me a bone and put some ideas in the air. Ta :)

  • Tbh, sounds like you've got it pretty well worked out already!

    You going for the box section Campy Omega rims or the Vee's?
    I have a rear V with the dark Hardox finish and soon to be front v Hardox and highly recommend.
    They're tough as nails, pretty light weight, and really look great to boot.
    Lace them to a set of Campy Record high flange hubs and its all win.

    Put that to a Campagnolo Super Record post and cranks and it only gets better.

    The Mavic cockpit could work out nicely, although to be fair, most things would look good on that frame!

    Which bull horns you thinking of? (pics helpful)

  • Shiiiit...I'm on my blackberry in bed, just wrote a shit load and then furked it up by pressing delete and it taking me back a page in the browser... Will save it for morning. There are very few times when I can't sleep. When its hot, when I'm stressed at work and when I've got a bike build on my mind... Its probably 20+ degrees out there, no Air con and my minds thinking about wheel possibilities! No sleep tonight then :)

  • I came back to my parents' house yesterday to find the Sugino 75 cranks & BB and Dura Ace 51t chainring had arrived.

    Won't have time or the place to fit them until the week after next though.

    The big ring is beautiful, it's going to have to stay, I'll just have to do a little cog shuffle, maybe, or just HTFU.

    The chain that is currently on the bike could handle 48x20 with the rear wheel all the way forward in the dropouts, and 48x14 with it nearer the back - will 51x18 and 51x15 fit? Is there a way of working that out?

    I changed over from 47:18 to 49:18 today and liking it.

  • I decided i want a 52 or 53:19 on my next project, if not, i will go for a sensible 47:17

    (steel track frame with classic road bars and a front brake)

    Yes, add up the numbers and divide the difference by 8

    48+20 = 68
    51+18 = 69
    => move wheel forward ⅛" i.e. probably won't work

    48+14=62
    51+15=66
    => move wheel forward ½"

    will work, you're already using a difference of ¾"

    or

    48+20 = 68
    51+15=66
    => move wheel backward ¼"

    This calculation is not absolutely precise, but it's near enough for normal combinations of gearing and chainstay length. The amount of wear in your chain and the non-circularity of your chainring will make more difference than the difference between ⅛" and the true change in axis distance.

  • tom if you want we could swap rings, mine is the same but 50. - I wanted to try gearing up a little.
