so you're saying the cones were screwed, but the insides of the hub - the other end of where the balls are rolling - was still in tact? i find this hard to imagine, tbh, did you look good enough? =))
Didn't get it under a microscope or magnifying glass, but to the naked eye and finger/fingernail the inside of the hubs were as new. The balls were also looking as new. The cones though had pitting and scoring marks. The marks looked like the balls had gotten bunched up or something and instead of rolling, they had been dragged/pushed around the race and the surface got chewed as a result. Could have been from improper adjustement/play rather than a direct result of corrosion due to water getting through the seals. Though it could have been that which caused the failure of the magic green DA grease that allowed them to do it. Who knows.

Not ugly, just less good looking. I know the Goldtec pro's will last for years without me having to take a second glance. But with DA's I'll always be worried about rain/dirt/abuse. It's not going to be a fair weather nag
Well in that case go Phil, lifetime warrenty. I had the same toss up on hubs and its what i eventually went for personally I think they look amazing but I got low flange so clearly my tastes are currently out of vogue.

needs mudguards, but otherwise very nice, which tyres and bars are they?
-
• #58085
I have a pair of Berthouds that i'll fit soon. Frame wasn't made for this size of tyres + mudguards so will have to customize them a little.
Wheels are 32mm Schwalbes, and bars Grand Cru.

I think he means the QR on the brakes... if those are the same as mine, the brake levers have a little doo dah to open them a bit wider. It looks a bit like yours might be open.

Cheers guys. I think it's gonna be a lovely machine. Somehow it does feel different though, it's all pretty much standard equipment as opposed to bikes I've had before. Will post some better pics once it's done, fingers crossed I'll finish it tomorrow :-)

Really? Can you elaborate on that? :)

After a lot of faffing and too much work my rat bike is finished in it's final guise... stinker to look at, awful photo, but great fun to ride... the thanks list on this one is long, but ought to mention retro de corsa for helping with threading the forks... life saver and top chap.

Figured out that the seat has moved back. The bolt wasn't overly tight (not lose, just not really tight). It's set back now.

picked up a pair of sweet peppers from yobaby today so now this house commutes with matching bars !
by the look of your saddle position and if you're sitting more upright that you're used to after fitting the drops, indeed you will probably benefit from a larger frame
